Definition
Islamic psychology or Ilm al Nafs (Arabic, )refers to the study of the Nafs (meaning "self" or "psyche" in Arabic) in the Islamic world. The essence of a person is the nafs and not the physical body. Thus personality and behavior are referred to as the nafs.

An-Nafs
Al-Quran used similar words of an-nafs; - Ruh (spirit/soul) Kalbu (heart) - Akal (intellect/reason) - fikiran (thought) - idea - perlakuan/perangai (behavior) - tingkah laku, kelakuan (conduct)

 Hadis (narrated); . : : . : . Once Aisyah (pbuh) was asked about the conduct of the prophet (saw). She said His character was conduct of the Quran.

 Quran discusses the attributes of Allah and behavior of creatures. ..and encourages us to study the behavior patterns of all for better understanding of the position of human beings and meaning of life.

Nature of Islamic Psychology

Is it scientific or not? IP possesses a well-organized theory Be able to support it universal laws and principles Emphasizes the search for truth It has own applicability in various field

 Psychology concerned with the response of these organism (creatures; man, animal, plant) to outside world. IP covers the study of behavior of organism and also non-living things, too. Therefore, IP comes under the categories of both biological and physical science.

Scope of IP
Behavior is a life long process. Includes all type of activities and experiences whether conscious or unconscious, affective, cognitive, normal, abnormal. Everything may be studied in the subject of IP

One of similar words of an-Nafs is ar-RUH (soul/spirit). Quran has limited to study of RUH; And they ask you (O Muhammad) concerning the Rooh (the Spirit); Say: "The Rooh (the Spirit): it is one of the things, the knowledge of which is only with my Lord. And of knowledge, you (mankind) have been given only a little."
