When was Bread first made?


Whilst no-one is absolutely sure as to when the first bread was made, man has been eating, albeit a crude form of flatbread, since 10,000 BC. Certainly the ancient Egyptians were making leavened (raised) bread with yeast by 3000BC and it is thought that the workers who built the pyramids were paid in bread. Not surprising that it has earned the title staff of life. Indeed, for many throughout the ages, bread has been a staple of their diet and it was so important, that laws concerning bread have existed for hundreds of years.

India
Roti
It is made from stoneground Wholemeal flour, traditionally known as atta flour, that originated in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

China
Mantou
Often reffered to as chinese steamed bun/Bread, is a kind of steamed bun originating in China. It is also called as working mans lunch

Italy
Bruschetta
It is an antipasto origin from italy whose origin dates to atleast 15th century. It consist of roasted bread rubbed with garlic and topped extra virgin olive oil.

Croissant
It is a buttery flaky pastry named for its distinctive crescent shape. It is made up of leavened variant of puff pastry.

Cottage loaves
A cottage loaf is characterized by its shape essentially that of two round loaves 1 on top of the other with the upper one being rather smaller.

Lavash
It is a soft thin flatbread.

It dries our quickly and becomes brittle and hard.

Greece
Pita Bread
It is a round pocket bread.The pocket in pita bread is created by steam which puffs up the dough. As the bread cools and flattens a pocket is left in the middle.

Spain
Tortilla
It means little torta or little cake. Flatbread tortillas have been eaten for many centuries in mexico. It is commonly prepared with meat.

Egypt
Challa
The dough is rolled into rope shaped pieces which are braided and brushed with an egg wash before baking to add a golden sheen.

Portugal
Rye bread
Rye bread is made of rye grain which is darker in color and stronger in flavor. This bread has notable health benefits when compared to white bread.

Scotland
Bannock
It is a variety of flat quick bread.
It is baked or cooked from grain.

When a round bannock is cut into wedges the wedges are often called scones.

America
Boston brown bread
It is dark moist and unique. Stays fresh but usually does not last very long unless you lock it away and limit yourself to 1 slice.

Graham Bread
Named after Dr.Graham American Nutritionist who advocated whole grain and whole meat as bread base.
