What is Wind Energy?

Energy contained in the force of the winds blowing across

earths surface.
Wind is created when air that has been warmed over sun-

heated land rises, leaving a vacuum in the space it once occupied.

Cooler surrounding air then rushes in to fill the vacuum.

This movement of rushing air is what we know as wind.

Why to use Wind Energy?

Eco-Friendly Space Efficient

Wind is free of cost

Can be easily setup in remote areas Great source to provide reliable and steady supply of

power.

Wind Generator and Windmills

Wind Turbines :- A device that converts Kinetic Energy

from the wind into Mechanical Energy.

Wind Generator :- Mechanical Energy is used to produce

Electricity. Also referred to as Wind Charger.

Windmills :- Mechanical Energy is used to drive machinery

such as grinding grain or pumping water. Also called as Wind Pumps

Schematics of Wind Turbine

Wind Energy : Scenario in India

The Indian wind energy sector has an installed capacity

of 14,157 MW (as on March 31, 2011).

India ranks 5th in the world

in terms of wind power

installed capacity.
Leading States are : Tamil Nadu (5904.4 MW) Maharashtra (2310.7 MW) Gujarat (2175 MW) Karnataka (1730 MW) Rajasthan (1525 MW)

Wind Energy : Scope in India

According to Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), Indias wind

energy capacity could increase 5 times d current capacity, if wind energy sector is supported by aggressive government policies.
Even in the absence of govt. policies, it is estimated that India can

increase the capacity up to

24 GW by 2020 30.5 GW by 2030

If aggressive policies are introduced then it is expected that the

capacity will increase to

65 GW by 2020 165 GW by 2030

Shortcomings of Wind Energy

Unreliable
Wind turbines generally produce allot less electricity. High initial cost/ infrastructure cost. Noise pollution.
