Goals of ASEAN

To accelerate the economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through joint endeavors; and
To promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law.

POLITICAL OBJECTIVES: PEACE AND STABILITY

Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (1976)

Contains fundamentals principles on interstate relations. Provides mechanisms for pacific settlement of disputes.

Treaty on the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone


15 December 1995

An undertaking by ASEAN states not to develop, manufacture, acquire, possess, test or use nuclear weapons. Negotiations for the accession of Nuclear Weapon States are underway.
