Why Television and Development?

It serves multiple purposes of entertainment, information and education. Besides performing motivational function it helps in providing discovery learning and cognitive development of its viewers.

Starting with 41 sets in 1962 and one channel , at present TV in India covers more than 70 million homes giving a viewing population more than 400 million individuals through more than 100 channels.

SITE (Satellite Instructional Television Experiment)


Launched in 1975 Objective to educate rural people about agricultural practices, family planning, hygiene and importance of education for all. Impact highest in the fields of agriculture and family planning.

Kheda project

1975-1990 Television sets installed in public places in villages. Purpose was to educate on social issues like exploitation, caste discrimination, alcoholism. Utilised television serials, folk dramas and puppets shows.

Began in 1961 Done for secondary school students in Delhi Done due to shortage of labs, equipments etc.

Began in 1984 Aim to upgrade quality of education for university students One hour programs educating on different courses, papers, exams etc.

KALYANI

Health series launched in 2002. Focuses on health issues such as malaria, AIDS, Tuberculosis, iron deficiency etc. Caters to 50% of the population. Been very successful

Television being the largest medium of mass media, the messages given by programs are delivered to a wide audience. Large part of the population get influenced through these programs. Stirs up responses Creates awareness Brings about necessary changes Help you form an opinion Makes you feel important in contribution therefore boosting confidence. Eg: PILs, national stirs Helps forming governments.

Public service television

Public service TV is often defined as the general in TV service. The transmission covers the whole country, independent of commercial and political interests. It shall feature a variety of programs, offering width, high quality and objective reporting of societal issues. It is alsointended for the public benefit rather than for purely commercial concerns. Public service shall give an important contribution to a democratic society through news, debates, debates, programs, documentaries, cultural programming, dramas, entertainment, sports, and so on. It shall have width and a great number of programs so that each viewer can find their own important programs. Public service TV doesn't need to seek a wide audience in every program; it can also create programs for smaller groups. Public service broadcasting is based on the principles of universality of service, diversity of programming, provision for minority audiences including the disadvantaged, sustaining an informed electorate, and cultural and educational enrichment.

Telecast has correlation with the funds. When disasters occur, the media play multiple roles: (i) Purvey information on incidents. (ii) They can impact news of impending disaster, convey the effects of events that have taken place or are unfolding. (iii) Natural disaster coverage can lead to political action
