Introduction
The DTS-i engine is the most successful engine ever produced by an Indian manufacturer. It is nothing but having two spark plugs instead of one in a cylinder. The ignition timings are controlled electronically and these sparks are made at different strokes to minimize the fuel waste. Both plugs have the same heat range and fire at the same moment. A throttle actuated ignition-control system works hand-in-glove with a chipcontrolled digital capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) system for accurate ignition timing under conditions

SPARK IGNITION
The term spark-ignition engine normally refers to internal combustion engines, specifically petrol engines, where the initiation of the combustion process of the air-fuel mixture is ignited within the combustion chamber by a spark from a spark plug. The term contrasts with diesel-fueled compression ignition engines, here the heat generated from compression is enough to initiate the combustion process.

Dual Spark Plug Design

Dual spark plugs were employed in certain modern automotive S.I.
engine generating with a very lean air fuel mixture.
The bore sizes in the automotive engines are of the order of 90mm. If the engines has 2 large valves positioned inline it will result in an offset spark plug and a large flame travel length. To reduce the flame travel length automotive manufacturers have adopted different techniques like centrally placed spark plug OR TWIN SPARK PLUGS. The twin spark plugs in the DTS-i system gives the engine knock

resistant under varying load condition and different quality of petrol.

Twin Spark Plug

DTS-i System
In the DTS-i engine two spark plugs are located in the cylinder head combustion

Chamber on the LH and RH side.

LH side spark plug is called primary spark plug and RH side spark plug is called the secondary spark Plug. The LH spark plug is fired at 350rpm approximately while the RH Spark plug is fired at an rpm of 750 approximately. Once the engine starts both the spark plugs fire simultaneously. The air fuel mixture is ignited from both the sides of combustion chamber and the time required for burning is less than single spark plug engine.

Why 2 Spark plugs?

With two valve conventional 2-wheeler engines the single sparking plug is normally located between, but one side of inlet and exhaust valve. This means that the nucleus of the flame, initiated at the sparking plug propagates only short distance to the cylinder wall so that its flame part is much greater when it moves across the combustion chamber. This leads to slower burning of the air-fuel mixture and creates limitations in optimizing the chamber.

DTS-i In Action
Idle speed Here both the spark plugs ignite simultaneously, piston reaches the top

dead centre or the highest point. When we start the engine during the idle rpm and
slow running with certain rotation of the throttle ignition timing is 10degrees before TDC, which activates 1st ignition map. Medium and high speed - Both the spark plugs ignite at the same time earlier than that of the idling. Ignition timing between the idling and upto 2000rpm remains 10 degrees before TDC. From 2000rpm onwards, the ignition timing advances and reaches 32degrees before TDC.The ignition timing suddenly drops with respect to

the rpm and then steadily advances with respect to the throttle position and
reaches 32degrees before TDC at 10000rpm,and thus second ignition map is switched on.

Why 4 Valve DTS-i is better than Conventional Engines?

1. Combustion chamber head area covered by the 4 valves is over 50% as compared to 33%in the 2 valve engines. 2. Smoother and faster evacuation of burnt gases.

3.

Twin spark plugs ensure faster and cleaner and more efficient
combustion.

4. 5.

Better power, throttle response and pick up at all speeds. Makes engine smaller and lighter.

Performance
The table below, shows the performance of the DTS-i engine in comparison to the simple engine. It is seen that the power and the torque has increased.

Advantages of Twin Spark

1. Twin ignition under favorable conditions permit light load part throttle

mixture.
2. Twin ignition tends to eliminate cycle to cycle variations in cylinder pressure, Particularly at light load conditions, which helps to reduce

rough and harsh running.

3. Twin ignition tends to improve the engines fuel consumption under part load operating conditions. 4. Twin ignition helps the ignition advance timing to be somewhat retarded which tends to improve the engines smoothness and response.

CONCLUSION
The DTS-i helps the 150 cc and the 180 cc motorcycles to meet the India 2005 emission norms without the use of secondary air injection and catalytic convertor.

The DTS-i engine delivers good performance, fuel economy and drivability
to the customer.
