THE NUMBER SYSTEM

NUMBERS
A number is a mathematical object used to count and measure. In mathematics, the definition of number has been extended over the years to include such numbers as zero, negative numbers, rational numbers, irrational numbers, and complex numbers.

TYPES OF NUMBERS
Numbers can be of the following types:

1 2 3 4

Real and Imaginary Numbers Rational and Irrational Numbers Integers and Fractions Natural and Whole Numbers

Real and Imaginary Numbers

Real Numbers
Real numbers are values that represent a quantity along a continuous line Any real number can be determined by a possibly infinite decimal representation

Imaginary Numbers

Numbers when squared give a negative result are called Imaginary Numbers

Rational and Irrational Numbers

Rational Numbers
A rational number is a number that can be written as a ratio That means it can be written as a fraction, in which both the numerator and the denominator are whole numbers

Irrational Numbers

An irrational number can be written as a decimal, but not as a fraction An irrational number has endless non-repeating digits to the right of the decimal point

Integers and Fractions

Integers
Integers are positive and negative whole numbers

Numbers which have a numerator as well Fractions as a denominator

Natural and Whole Numbers

Natural Numbers
Numbers starting from 1,2,3,4,5. till infinite, are called Natural Numbers Natural numbers including 0 are called Whole Numbers

Whole Numbers
