Collaborating with Others

By: Elizabeth Cross

Collaborating with other teacher is an advantage that all teachers should take advantage of no matter if they are new and just starting out or are veteran teachers. Having other teachers in the same grade level can help when it comes time for putting together lesson plans instead of having to think of ones on your own. Extra advantages would be the different skills each teacher has and can share with you to better a lesson or classroom management. Further benefits would be the ability to borrow from another teacher, such as ideas for lessons, supplies for a project, etc The biggest reason for collaboration is for support in your grade level and support throughout the school. Support from other teachers that have been there and done that is peace of mind that I can get through a day with peace of mind and that I have accomplished something with the support of my fellow teachers.

Standard Based Literacy Activities

By: Elizabeth Cross
W.3.7 Conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a subject. Here students will choose a subject that they know a little bit about but want to know more about, such as dinosaurs. After a subject is chosen students will use any resource in the classroom to find information about their subject and write a one page paper, describing what they knew and what they learned.

SL.1.6 Produce a complete sentence when appropriate to task and situation. Students will create a bumper sticker with a sentence with and picture to demonstrate the importance of reading and writing.

Managing a Literacy Center

By: Elizabeth Cross

There are many types of literacy centers teachers can create to help students understand why reading and writing is so important. Managing a literacy center does not mean that a teacher needs to necessarily need to re-create the wheel, but can choose one that has already been proven successful. To manage a literacy center it would first need to be a center that coincides with the current lesson. This would be a center where students can go to when they are done with a particular lesson. To keep it manageable students would need to go individually or two at a time so things do not get chaotic. Literacy centers can change with each story or can be a year round center to help the students with understanding of a particular standard that is being taught.

Key Elements of a Lesson Plan

By: Elizabeth Cross

Lesson plans contain many key elements that provide details of how to begin, follow though, and end a lesson. Summary of a Lesson Plan: this is the first thing that should be done for a lesson plan. It allows for a previous lesson review and/or a new topic that is going to be introduced. This section is typically one or two sentences at the most. Grade Level: here is where the grade that is being taught, example 3rd grade. Skill Level: this allows for the teacher to know what skill level group he/she will be teaching, e.g. below level, on-level, above level, and all skill levels. Typically a teacher will teach all levels at the beginning of the lesson and then move on to the different skill level groups. Grouping Structure: Allows for different types of grouping structures for students to work in. Students can work in groups, as a class whole or individually, also allowing the different skills levels to work and learn from each other. Objectives: show what is to be taught and which standard the lesson is being tied into. Procedure: is what the students are going to by doing during the lesson, step-bystep instructions for the lesson. Assessment: is key to a lesson, this shows weather or not the students have understood the material and if not what they are not understanding. Homework: is optional but is a good thing, it allows the students additional practice or time to finish work from the day. Materials: are what is going to be needed for a lesson.

Displaying Student Work

By: Elizabeth Cross

Displaying my students work is not only something that I am going to be proud of, but the students themselves are going to be proud as well and wanting others to see the work they are proud of. Displaying their work will bring self-confidence and encourage them to continue the good work. In my classroom will be a bulletin board that will always be up for students to showcase their excellent work in any subject. This will be up years round so the students are able to switch out their work when they find a new piece of work they are proud of. Another way of displaying my students work would either be on the outside of my classroom door and/or have a bulletin board right outside the classroom. This would be for a project that the students are working on and wanted to show their progress or their finished work to the rest of the students, teachers and staff. Work that is displayed will be chosen by the student. Displaying their work is something that will inspire students of all ages and grades to do the best that they can do.

Family Involvement
By: Elizabeth Cross Family involvement is such a crucial and critical and crucial part to a students learning and development in a classroom. It would be ideal to have every parent help out in the classroom, reality is that one or both parents work in order to provide for the household. At home parents can begin by helping with their child's homework, making sure they have completed the work and that they have everything they need for the next day. At home parents can be involved by encouraging their children that they can do anything they put their mind to. At the beginning of the year and through out the year will be newsletters telling parents of upcoming events and opportunities to come in and be a part of the classroom. My classroom will have an open door policy where parents are not only welcome but encouraged to come in and talk with me about any thoughts or concerns they may have. Parent involvement is vital to a smooth running school year with the students and parents alike. Parents will be encouraged to volunteer for school events, classroom events, reading time which will be every Friday afternoon and welcome to come on field trips. I want my classroom to be a safe environment where students will be excited to come and to class and learn and be a place where they can come to when they have any type of problem.
