108 AFTER ACCIDENT

Bridge Description

BR NO 108 In between stations MPP & DKE of Lumding-Badarpur (MG) Hill Section Of N.F.Railway Situated At KM 52/4-5 On a 6.5 curve On River Boila Nallah Between the valley of several hills No approach is available Terror stricken area Pier height 22m

Span

1 x 18.3M plate girder + 3 x 30.5M under slung girder + 2 x 18.3M plate girder . Abutments, Pier P1 & P5 are of stone masonry and rest of the piers P2,P3 & P4 are made of trestles .

Accident Details
Train Formation

Time of occurrence: On dt 25.06.2007 at 9.40hrs. MG Goods Train - Loaded wagons pulled by two locos Fell into the bridge Excess speed was the cause of accident. Damage: P4 trestle was uprooted and P3 trestle damaged. Under slung Girder of 30.5m (span no 4) and Plate Girder of 18.3m (span no 5) fallen down on river bed. Casualty: Two Loco Pilots found dead.

Restoration

ART with staff arrived from LMG at 12.20 hrs ARME arrived from LMG at 19.55 hrs. Clearance of site started. Setting up Camps and deployment of security personnel. Restoration with departmental resources & staffs was decided. Safety equipments were provided to staff.

CLEARANCE OF SITE

Deptt. labours employed 65 Persons. Dismantling of 30.5m under slung and 18.3 PG to clear the site for reconstruction of damaged trestles and its footings.

Restoration was challenging because


i) Br located on curve. ii) Pier height 22m. iii) Underslung girder of 30.5 span. iv) Monsoon season.

Temp tower T1 to support span no 3 at BPB end. Casting of uprooted foundation of P3. To erect new trestles at P3 & P4. To launch 18.3 PG of span no 5 from BPB end . Assembling 30.5m CH Span at BPB end on the same alignment of track.

Launching of CH Span with the help of BFR and special type of skid providing, service spans between P3 & P4. Erection of temp tower T2 started in between P3 & P4. Assembling CH Span Started at BPB end.

When the temporary staging T2 was nearing completion, the staging was washed out by devastating flood. Loss of time and wastage of labour force. Planning of launching the CH span from BPB end was reviewed and changed.

2nd STAGE PLANNING OF CH SPAN (Changed Scheme)


Working scheme was reviewed. It was decided to assemble & launch 30.50m by cantilever method, CH Span from LMG end instead of BPB end. Shifted CH span materials to LMG end. Slewed the girders of span no 1&2 towards upstream side ,to have a straight alignment for assembling & launching of CH span.

Then assembling of CH span started at LMG end. Casting of foundations of piers of P3 & P4,after providing dowel bars and holding down bars to stone masonry, were finished. By this time new materials for tresstles of P3 & P4 reached at site, then errection of the same started also.

LAUNCHING OF PG IN SPAN NO 5. Service girders were erected in span no 5. After arrival of new Plate girders, this was brought from BPB end on dip lorries on track gauge of 2.1m. Lowered the girders in position in span no 5 with erected gantries and 10t winches.

It was assembled at LMG end on a straight track of 60m length on 1.075m gauge including launching nose The girder of span no 5 was made 12m straight for receiving the launching nose in straight track Launching nose portion was kept 75mm down to take care of deflection.

CH span was pulled to position . At one end it was pulled by one winch and at other end it was restrained by another winch. For sliding PTFE was used. First the CH Span was pulled in cantilever position then got simply supported on pier P4.

Launching nose was disconnected, after hanging the CH span with 26m high derricks. CH span was lowered with a gantry & 2 pullies at each end by synchronized winches at each ends. The two trusses of CH span was spread by side slewing by horizontal jacks. Cross beams, stringers & bracings etc were connected.

Rocker at one end &slide bearing at another end were provided.

Track were linked after aligning the girders to their desired positions. On completion of linking, the gauge, super elevation, bearing of girders, all others were checked thoroughly. Light engines with two locos were allowed to roll over the track and then the track was certified fit by competent authority. It took 105 days to complete the restoration .

CONCLUSION

Due to excess speed the derailment has occurred and lot of inconvenience faced by various corners of peoples from India and there was interruption of traffic for more than 3months. With best efforts of higher officials and with devotion of deptt. workers the restoration was completed.
