Required to have taken postsecondary courses such as chemistry, biology, and anatomy.

Must have a bachelor's degree to start pharmacy school. Must take the Pharmacy College Admissions Test. Pharmacy programs take about 4 years to finish.

Must complete four years of undergraduate school and receive a bachelors degree. Must complete 4 years of Pharmacy school and receive your Pharm. D. Some programs offer a 3 year option of Pharmacy school. It takes about 6-8 years to become a pharmacist.

All states require you to have a license. After Pharm. D. you must pass two exams to get a license.

People who are going into pharmacy need to understand that the practice of pharmacy is transforming from an assembly line associate to MTM, Increasing QOL, and drug adherence. My dad is a pharmacist, and now that I'm in med school I've really come to realize how awesome his knowledge of pharmacology is. The whole time I was growing up I thought his job was just to count pills into a bottle, but now that we talk about things that I'm learning, I know that's far from the case. I will definitely be utilizing my pharmacy colleagues for consultation once I'm in practice.

My sister is currently in her 2nd year of pharmacy in Canada and I never realized just how much they learn. I had a clearly misconstrued idea about the timid and pillcounting pharmacist until I became aware of all of the knowledge. The training and the options pharmacists can undertake upon completion. The role of the pharmacist I think has been so heavily stigmatized that people don't understand just how useful their pharmacists can be. I personally believe it is up to the pharmacists to take on a greater role.

Employment of pharmacists is expected to increase by 25 percent from 2010 to 2020. As healthcare continues to become more complex and as more people take multiple medications, more pharmacists will be needed to counsel patients on how to use their medications safely. A significant number of pharmacists are expected to retire in the coming decade, new pharmacists will be need to fill these positions.
