CRUDE OIL WASHING

Specialised Tanker Safety Course Presented by GROUP - 2

C.O.W. Presentation
Our requirement is to perform C.O.W, complete discharge and prepare for sea. This requires careful planning and risk assessment to be carried out in following stages:

PLANNING
PRE ARRIVAL BEFORE C.O.W. DURING C.O.W. AFTER C.O.W.

HOW TO PERFORM C.O.W.

Information on how to perform the Crude Oil Washing operations is detailed in: The IMO publication on Crude Oil Washing Systems and Vessels approved Operations and Equipment Manual provided by the company.

PRE - ARRIVAL
Crude oil washing is carried out while the cargo discharge is in progress towards the end. Obtain permission from terminal 24 hours prior arrival at discharge port. Test run the Inert Gas (I.G) plant as this is a must as per regs for darrying out C.O.W. Check all alarms on the I.G system and set Oxygen alarm to 5% ensure availability of this quality of oxygen so that at the tanks it is less than 5%. Test cargo pump emergency trips and low I.G pressure trips.

PRE ARRIVAL contd

Ensure tank cleaning heater is blanked off. Close all valves to tank washing machines and pressure test C.O.W lines and check for leaks. Check proper operation of: - Pressure gauges - Tank gauging system - Communication equipment - Portable instruments.

BEFORE PERFORMING C.O.W.

Having completed all pre arrival checks, complete the ship/shore safety check list. Ensure all members of COW team briefed including shore team and plan available. Ensure communication link established and tested between ship and shore. Establish and agree upon abort

Before C.O.W.. Contd

Ensure positive IG pressure in all tanks Check oxygen content below 5% Set and align all valves and pipelines required for the tank concerned. Ensure gauges in tanks are secured to avoid damage. Set required washing pattern on the machine.

Before C.O.W contd

Ensure responsible person in attendance through out the operation. Soon as the operation is commenced confirm that there are no leakage in the system The COW oil shall be free of any water content. This should be ensured by discharging the 1st 1 metre of each supply tank.

During C.O.W
Monitor I.G frequently. Monitor The COW machine and associated lines and system frequently for any leaks Pump room under constant vigilance Ascertain the designated tanks are being COW. Maintain a pressure of about 9.5 10.5 kg/cm2

During COW
Continuously monitor the tank atmosphere to ensure in safe range Ensure adequate stern trim to facilitate bottom washing. Essential to continuously monitor level of slop tank to prevent over flow during educting.

AFTER COW
Upon completion of COW drain all lines. Close all the tank cleaning machine valves. Strip all lines, pumps and tanks as per manual. Complete entries in the Oil record book.
