Emotion is the complex physiological experience of an individual's state of mind as interacting with biochemical (internal) and environmental (external ) influences.

It is a branch of the artificial intelligence that deals with the design of systems and devices that can recognize, interpret, and process human emotions. It is an interdisciplinary field spanning computer science, & psychology

Emotion: a concept involving two components

Expressions (audiovisual: face, gesture, posture, voice intonation, breathing noise) Biological arousal (ANS: heart rate, respiration frequency/intensity, perspiration, temperature, muscle tension, brain wave)

Cross-cultural research by Ekman shows that some emotional expressions are universal: Happiness Sadness Anger Fear Disgust Surprise

It is done by measuring specific features of the audio, such as tone of voice, pitch or volume, intensity, rate of speech. The speech of a surprised speaker tends to be faster, louder and higher in pitch while that of a sad or depressed speaker.
