Project Under

(KPTCL) with a network management system that integrates supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) technology with energy management systems. They will monitor and control 830 main transmission and distribution substations spread across the state of Karnataka, including Bangalore.

This project is for online measurement of the various parameters of the power grid. This project is useful for the control of the parameters within the targeted range according to the load change. If any fault occurs in the grid or in parameters the validation process is employed.

SCADA is Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. SUPERVISORY CONTROL of equipment. DATA ACQUISITION , i.e. ability to get various information from the field by some means.

RTU - REMOTE TERMINAL UNIT

RTU Remote Terminal Unit is a Micro Controller based device, which acts as an interface between SCADA and the field instruments i.e. switchgears of Sub-Station. Its small ruggedized computer. Its a stand alone data acquisition and control unit.

The top rack, consists of CPU and communication ports

The 2nd rack, consists of DI, AI and AO cards The 3dr rack, consists of DO, cards Each rack is supported by separate power supply cards

Remote Terminal Unit - 560A in KPTCL Project

Collects analog data like MW, MVA,

frequency, voltage from metering core of

CT, PT through MFTs.

MFTs are self powered, it takes supply from PT.

Collects digital indications like CB open, close, auto trip, Isolator open.

Through DO relays, Tap raise/low and CB can be controlled from control centre.

Collects miscellaneous analog inputs like DC voltage, Tap position through transducers.

Requires 48V DC

RTU Configuration can be defined as a process of making the RTU aware of the hardware connected to it, the signals that are configured and the protocols that have been used. The user interface offers three trees that define the system structure of the RTU.

This is an introduction to the Data Engineering Tool, which is a software package in the SPIDER family. The tool is used for both the initial process data entry and for the process data maintenance. The DE tool is using the relation database Oracle as a maintenance database (MDB) for off-line storage of the process description information.
Graphical Editor, it enables the operator to describe the network in a graphical environment.

The entered data in the network can be directly perceived through graphical symbols and colors.

WHY VSAT TECHNOLOGY ?

* HIGHLY RELIABLE SYSTEM * EASY TO INSTALL, OPERATE & MAINTAIN * NEED LITTLE OR NO MAINTENANCE * SUITABLE FOR UNMANNED REMOTE SITES * REASONABLY ECONOMICAL * NEED VERY LOW POWER * GROUPING OF RTUs IS INDEPENDANT * ROUTING OF DATA IS INDEPENDENT * TRAFFIC BAUD RATE IS CONFIGURABLE

RTU Interfacing with Field Panel

CT, PT,DI & DO cables are laid from C & R panels to IF panel & RTU, for 66 kV and above. Extension of CT, PT in case of 11kV is avoided by fixing MFTs at Kiosk. Signal cable is to be laid from 11kV kiosk to RTU for collecting MFT data. Cabling has to be done in PVC conduit of suitable size wherever no cable duct is available.

OPTOCOUPLER FOR DIS

CONCLUSION
Todays SCADA systems are able to take advantage of the evolution from mainframe based to client/server architectures. These systems use common communications protocols like Ethernet and TCP/IP to transmit data from the field to the central master control unit. SCADA systems are widely used to monitor and control U.S. critical infrastructure utilities such as Electrical Power Plants and Water Distribution Centers.
