The Taiping folks are still steep in their tradition. Traditional games especiallybatu seremban, guli, congkakdanteng-teng are very much played by children. Indians - the control of the SriVijay an Empire in the Malaya Archipelago led to the influence of Hinduism in sports-performed only on special occassions. Therefore, sporting activities were much influenced by Animism and Hinduism.

In the early days, sports was managed by clubs and associations run voluntarily by sports enthusiasts. Clubs were formed to manage training and competitions were held between clubs and villages.

The concept of national sports in reference to indigenous sports were given more emphasis to establish a national identity. Tunku Abdul Rahman -love for football-president of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) later as head of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Tun Abdul Razak Hussein -golf and hockey- president of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) in 1959 -1976 and president of the Malaysian Hockey Federation.

The construction of the Merdeka Stadium - the first sports development initiated by Tengku. The stadium facilitated especially on football. The Merdeka Football Tournament that was part of the Merdeka celebration soon became one of the most prestigious football tournaments in Asia. Malaysia has excelled in football , badminton (early 40-60s), athletics, hockeys. The Youth and Sports Ministry is established in 1972 to implement government policy on youth and sports development.
