Indians - the control of the SriVijay an Empire in the Malaya Archipelago led to the influence of Hinduism in sports-performed only on special occassions. Therefore, sporting activities were much influenced by Animism and Hinduism.

The Merdeka Football Tournament that was part of the Merdeka celebration soon became one of the most prestigious football tournaments in Asia.
