EVAPORATION OF WATER

Lets start our journey.

DEFINITION

FACTOR SIMILARITY
DIFFERENCES APPLICATION

Do you really want to know how evaporation occur? Say yeslet s start our journey. Enjoy your watching!!!

What is water evaporation?

A process in which liquid is slowly lost from the surface of the liquid in the form of water vapour into the atmosphere. Occur at any time and any temperature.

You better watch the next picture

AIR HUMIDITY

SURROUNDING TEMPERATURE

SURFACE AREA

AIR MOVEMENT

AIR HUMIDITY

Drying air has less water molecules. Therefore evaporation of water occurs faster.

SURROUNDING TEMPERATURE

High temperature give more energy to the water molecules to escape into the air.

SURFACE AREA

A big surface area enables more water molecules to escape into the air.

AIR MOVEMENT

Wind (moving air) quickens the water evaporation process by transportingthe evaporated water molecules to other places

Okay..lets look the differences in the next picture !!!

What can you see from the picture? Based on your understanding, which situation will lead to the highest process of evaporation? Why?

Lets find the answer----------->.

SIMILARITIES BETWEEN EVAPORATION AND BOILING

Involve the change of state from liquid to gas Both process absorb heat

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN EVAPORATION AND BOILING

EVAPORATION
Takes place at any temperature and any time Take place only on the surface of the water The rate of process is slow Influenced by the surface area of the liquid, surrounding temperature, air movement and humidity.

BOILING
only takes place at boiling point Occur throughout the water The rate of reaction is fast Not influenced by the surface area of the liquid, surrounding temperature, air movement and humidity.

APPLICATION OF WATER EVAPORATION IN EVERYDAY LIFE

Example of application of water evaporation

Producing table salt
Salt particles move about the water. Each particle is surrounded by water molecules.

The water particles (molecules) keep the salt particles from rearranging themselves back into a salt crystal. Salt particles are carried throughout the solution surrounded by water particles.

As the water evaporates less and less water molecules are present to keep the salt particles apart. The salt therefore recrystalises and can be collected.

This is the way salt is collected from sea water. Sea water is trapped and allowed to evaporate leaving behind the solid salt.
