PREPARATION OF CHECK LIST ON NURSING AUDIT

INTRODUCTIONAn audit is systematic and official examination of a record, process or account to evaluate performance. Auditing in health care organizations provides managers with a mean of applying the control process to determine the quality of services rendered.

NURSING AUDITNursing audit is an evaluation of patient care through analysis of the nursing records maintained by nurses in patients care. It is also defined as the basic form of quality data collection in patient care.

OBJECTIVES OF NURSING AUDIT To justify the cost occurred on human and material resources. To take remedial actions towards cost effectiveness. To evaluate excellence of nursing practice. To revise and plan standards of nursing care. To avoid external audit being imposed on the profession from outside, it means to avoid anticipatory problems if external audit is done.

STEPS OF NURSING AUDITSelection of topic for study. Selection of explicit criteria for quality care. Review of record to see if criteria for quality care met. Peer review of all cares that do not meet criteria for quality care. Specific recommendation to correct deficiency such as staff development program ,change in procedure etc. Follow up the topic to see that problems have been eliminated.

ELIGIBILTY- Minimum 5 members who are interested in quality assurance and clinically competent are able to work together in group.

ADVANTAGES OF NURSING AUDIT

Can be used as method of measurement in all areas of nursing. Seven functions are easily understood. Scoring system is fairly simple. Result easily understood.

Assess the work of all those involved in recording care.

DISADVANTAGES OF NURSING AUDIT Appraises the outcomes of nursing process, so it is not useful in are where the nursing process has not been implemented. Many of components overlap making analysis difficult. It is time consuming. Requires a team of trained auditors. Deals with large amount of information.
