Parish Council Presentation October 6, 2010

Mission
St. Nectarios Preschool children will be educated in a safe, nurturing environment where all children can learn. Our preschool is a faith-based early childhood program in which the highest academic standards are interwoven with the spiritual, moral, and social aspects of child development.

General Information
Traditional-based curriculum within a Christian setting Curriculum Developmentally Appropriate - Follows Illinois Early Learning Standards Classroom Make-up : 3-4 year olds in a multi-age classroom setting (3 yrs. by Sept. 1 potty trained) Student/Teacher Ratio = 16/2 (1 teacher and aide) Parents choose: 2,3,or 5 day program

Curriculum Guided by the Illinois Early Learning Standards


Early Learning and development are multidimensional; developmental domains are highly interrelated Children are individuals who develop at different rates and bring with them different sets of skills Young children learn through active exploration Knowledge of child development, together with consistent expectations maximize the early childhood educational experiences of children

Preschool Space
Old community center room Bathroom and sinks are readily available Area is easy to secure Classroom space is suitable to our needs at this time Outside play area courtyard area between church and old community center to be fenced in and gym when inclement weather occurs

Director/Lead Teacher Position


Must be Illinois State certified teacher Full time 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Job Description Director responsible for personnel, curriculum, parent communications, staff development, discipline, program development, student recruitment

Works under the direction of the Director/Lead Teacher

Tuition
2 days = $180/month 3 days = $275/month 5 days = $425/month $75 non-refundable registration fee with 1 month of tuition to be prepaid at time of registration

Typical Daily Schedule


9-11:30 a.m. Preschool Instruction with snack 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Sack Lunch and recess 12:30-2:00 p.m. Enrichment classes to be offered at an extra charge: P.E., Greek School, Reading Readiness, Cooking etc.

Language Arts
Demonstrate alphabet knowledge, understand pictures and symbols, left to right progression of reading, identify labels and signs in the environment, make letter/sound matches, retell a story, begin early stages of writing

Math
Use concepts that include number recognition, counting and one-to-one correspondence Count with understanding and recognize how many Solve simple mathematical problems Sort and classify objects by a variety of properties

Science
Uses senses to explore and observe materials and natural phenomena Investigate and categorize living things in the environment Use common weather-related vocabulary Identify basic concepts of seasons Express wonder and ask questions about their world

Social Studies
Develop an awareness of community and roles of leaders in their environment Recognize the need for rules/order Express beginning geographical thinking Understand that each of us belongs to a family Recognize similarities and differences in people

Curriculum
Religion Curriculum to be determined with clergy and teacher P.E. - Engage in play using gross and fine motor skills, demonstrate physical fitness, cooperation with others during p.e. activities Technology Preschool software on 1-2 donated computers Field Trips In/out of school field trips planned to coincide with units being taught

Fine Arts creative movement, drama, use a variety of mediums- paint, glitter, glue, scissors to create art Social /Emotional Describe self by using several characteristics, show empathy and caring for others, engage in cooperative group play, respect the rights of self and others

School Calendar will follow District 15- with the exception of Easter Break which will coincide with church calendar

Vision Where do we go from here?


With Gods Blessings Build our preschool program one grade level at a time so that it grows into a school for the children of our parish. The school will be a place for our children to learn in a safe, nurturing environment where excellent academic standards are integrated within a faithbased program. This will help our children become excellent scholars and will help them build a firm foundation upon which they can grow and practice Orthodoxy in their daily lives.
