I. Company/Technology
1. Profile
smartfiber AG was founded in September 2005 to combine the scientific know-how gained over ten years of R&D activity by the Thringen Institute for Textile and Plastics Research (TITK) with the Corporate background provided by marketing and sales professional Michael Kohne.
smartfiber AG: develops, produces an sells smartcel functional fibers for a wide range of industrial segments. has a highly qualified research team of more than 40 scientists and production tool assistants. in July 2007 took over the factory, the patents and the employees of SeaCell in Rudolstadt. The result of this takeover was an increase in production capacity of more than 500 tons per year.
2. Scientific background
TITK in Rudolstadt has more than ten years of experience in the field of original polymer research and functional fibers. Up to the present the applied research of the TITK, based on the pure textile competence in application of fibers in the textile industry, has been developed to a top-modern, worldwide-known institute for materials research. The by the institute developed and patented ALCERU-process is a low-waste and environment-friendly technology for forming cellulose. To manufacture functional fibers, amine oxides and water are used to separate the cellulose directly and without chemical modification, and the textile fibers are then produced in a spinning process.
3. smartcel/SeaCell Technology
The smartcel functional fiber is a lyocell fiber made from cellulose using a modified ALCERU-production process.
The ability to mix organic or inorganic additives homogeneously into the fibers makes it possible to manufacture various functional fibers which offer a variety of exceptional performances features and efficiency levels.
10
11
smartcel features
The Lyocell process is purely physical: In contrast to the viscose process it is characterised by a modern standard of environmental compatibility (low environmental pollution, closed solvent circuits). Since the fibre is made of cellulose, smartcel is 100% biodegradable, and as a renewable raw material it contributes to conserving resources. smartcel combines the advantages of cellulose fibers, such as optimal moisture absorbtion, with functional properties such as bioactivity and temperature regulation. Overall, smartcel is characterized by excellent suitability for textile processing, wide versatility in application and high efficiency.
hohen Wirkungsgrad.
12
smartcel Fibers
The smartcel-technology enables various fields of application in different sectors of industry. The use of various additives yields nine product segments, which all contain the smartcel- technology and can also be combined with one another.

1. smartcel sensitive
15
smartcel sensitive
smartcelTM sensitive the new functional fiber of smartfiber AG with the essential trace element zinc: antibacterial, skin-caring, natural and also dyeable in white.
16
What is Zinc?
Zinc is a real elixir of life. It has a decisive influence on our well-being like few other nutrients.
It is present everywhere in the body and is of critical importance for the core functions of the body.
It strengthens the immune system (the bodys defenses) but also sensory functions and fertility. As an essential component of over 100 enzymes, it contributes to the digestion and utilisation of fats, proteins and carbohydrates and is closely involved in energy production. Zinc also has a vital function for the skin. It helps to defend against infection in the long term and to heal inflammation and wounds. Zinc-containing creams and cosmetic care products which are applied to the skin often promote healing.
17
Functionality
The incorporation of zinc elements in the smartcelTM sensitive-fibers also means that the build-up of odour and bacteria is kept decisively at bay. The antibacterial effect of zinc is based on the oligodynamic effect, which describes a disruption in the bacterial metabolism. The cell membrane is altered and the exchange of substances with the environment is made more difficult.
18
It meets DAB 10 purity requirements and other international regulations for the preparation of pharmaceuticals.
It is used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, dental chemistry and nutritional supplements, among others.
19
Washes very well and can be dyed in all colours, including white
Patented technology, effective in the long term (functional permanence)

21
2. smartcel clima
22
smartcel clima
smartcel-technology a micro heat accumulator with extraordinary potential! smartcel clima-fiber is a PCM (phase change material)-micro composite with thermo regulating features. smartcel clima is an essential technological and functional improvement in comparison to the classic phase change materials.
23
smartcel clima
Via direct spinning paraffin is embedded in the highly crystalline and tear-resistant smartcel functional fiber. (one of the long-known effects of paraffin is that it absorbs or emits heat when melting or solidifying.)
Thus unequaled many micro composite accumulators per unit of cellulose can be processed.
The effect is that with comparable textile features greater heat accumulator capacity can be achieved (up to 80 joules per gram of fiber). Textiles manufactured on the basis of smartcel clima can absorb excessive body heat, and if required, dispense it. Thus temperature regulation is assured, providing extraordinary wearing comfort and an excellent micro climate.
24
Classic phase change materials Based on: natural lyocell fiber Via direct spinning of paraffin (without capsules) Contains paraffin extracted from colza More storage capacity ( up to 80 joules/g of fiber)
Based on viscose or synthetic fiber. Works with encapsulated synthetic paraffin Thereby limited quantity of capsules and limited storage capacity By mechanical forces the capsules burst and the fibers lose the ability to store heat. Very bumpy surface structure
Electron microscope image: (PCM-capsules, bumpy surface)
Electron microscope transmitted light image (homogeneous structure: whole fiber works as accumulator.)
Better permanence of functions, due to avoided bursting of capsules Smooth surface Better textile workability
Additional features
Very good textile workability Very good colourability Even with high filling grades the surface of the fiber remains smooth, with a classic finish and processability. This provides the demanded fiber fineness and makes the fiber insensitive to mechanical and chemical forces. Depending on the choice of paraffin, the temperature range of heat absorbtion or heat dissipation can be adjusted according to the application.

Anti-oxidative properties
Free radicals (in high quantities) have a big potential to influence health in a negative way. Many studies show a close connection between the existence of free radicals and the occurance of severe diseases of the human organism. The radical quenching characteristics of seaweed work in SeaCell products in the same way as in seaweed.
The radical quenching activity of SeaCell-fiber and fabrics is verified by ABEL Antioxidant Test at Friedrich Schiller University Jena.

5. smartcel bioactive
43
smartcel bioactive
smartcel bioactive benefits from the advantages of the bactericide silver and kills bacteria and viruses in a natural way. The antibacterial effect of silver has been known for centuries. Already our great-grandparents put a silver coin in water or milk to preserve their freshness.
44
smartcel bioactive
The effectiveness of silver is based on the release of so-called ions, electrically charged positive elementary particles. These ions kill bacteria and viruses in a natural way by blocking their energy reproduction, i.e. micro-organisms starve in a manner of speaking. Since no bacteria can develop, there is no decomposition process and thus no unpleasant smells deodorant effect. By integrating finely ground ion exchangers, large quantities of silver can be bonded into the smartcel bioactive functional fiber. High charging capacity and uniform distribution ensure extremely high efficiency. The silver content can be adapted precisely to each specific application.
45
Additional Features
High efficiency in its antibacterial effectiveness even after more than 80 wash cycles at 95 C.
Excellent textile manufacturing The antibacterial effect has been tested and certified by independent laboratories: The Research Institute Hohenstein certified smartcel bioactives high antibacterial effectiveness.
Dermatological tests by ProDerm of Hamburg have confirmed its excellent skin compatibility.
The requirements of EN ISO 10993 (biological evaluation of medical products) are therefore met. (Institute Fresenius) smartcel bioactive has been included in the list of bioactive substances accepted by ko-Tex.

6. smartcel hygienic
50
smartcel hygienic
The smartfiber AG has utilised the fungicide and antibacterial effect of copper to manufacture the smartcelTM hygienic-fiber. The lyocell fiber is charged with a copper salt solution.
51
smartcel hygienic
In many processes of every day life the human body resorts to existing copper depots in the organism. Copper is absorbed daily through our food. The element is a necessary requirement for the production of the red blood pigment haemoglobin, which transports oxygen throughout the body. Copper is also responsible for wound healing, cell growth, strengthening of the autoimmune system as well as for the build-up of the defensive forces and the bone structure. The active ingredient depots which are incorporated into the smartcelTM hygienic-fiber release a specific amount of the active agent in the form of copper ions when in contact with humidity. Thus adding just small amounts of smartcelTM hygienic already causes a pemanent stop of the microbial contamination of filters, air-conditioning systems and functional non-wovens, so that fungi, bacteria and viruses can not spread.
52
