Purpose summarise data, make predictions, identify trends or simulate a real life situation.

Computers can examine vast quantities of data with incredible speed and accuracy, manually examine vast quantities of data is tedious and prone to errors.

Secondary storage

Hard Disk (secondary storage)

Primary storage

RAM (primary Storgae)

CPU

CPU (central processing unit)

Does not require power to maintain data Permanent storage Ram retrieves data from the hard disk.

Random Access Memory Primary storage Requires power to maintain memory Volatile storage (non-permanent) Operates at greater speeds than the hard disk. CPU retrieves data from RAM

Central Processing Unit Can olny operate as fast as the RAM and Hard Disk can get data to it.

Seek and latency times measure performance. Seek time the average time taken for the read head to move in or out to a given track. Latency time the average wait time for the data to arrive under the head.

Measures to determine the speed of data transfer:

Spindle speed the speed at which the disk

rotates in revolutions per minute (rpm) .

Areal density the maximum number of bits

that can be stored on each square inch o fthe disk surface.

A fast memory area on the hard disks circuit board. If data is retrieved from the hard disk it resides in the cache until it is cleared. Retrieving data from the cache is many times faster than having to retrieve it from the hard disk.

RAM holds both the software and the data used by the CPU during processing. The best way to improve performance is to add extra RAM.

Comparing CPUs is difficult as different CPU designs are used for different sets of instructions. If the CPU designs are the same then one that processes at 64bits will be twice as fast as one that processes 32 bits per second.

Find in excel. find nemo.xlsx Searching the process of actually retrieving the data, examining data items and comparing them to a search criteria. Selecting the process of specifying the source of the data to be searched. Searching is performed on the slected data using the specified criteria.

If the source data to be searched is not sorted into an appropriate order then searching requires each data item to be examined on turn. If the data is sorted appropriately then the search process can execute more efficiently.
