Simple and effective, the Exchange offers a way for companies to market their excess inventory to buyers worldwide. In October of 2011, the Wire Rope Exchange introduced it’s new website, offering features and options that make it an even better online marketplace for its subscribers.
History
The Wire Rope Exchange started as the brainchild of Pat Poe of Cumberland Sales Company. In 1984, faced with some overstocked products and stagnant inventory, Poe typed up a two-page letter describing his stock and mailed it to all of his customers. The idea worked well and soon caught on among Poe’s friends, who started asking him if they could add their own products to his letter. This short letter became a regular newsletter as more companies opted in. Eventually, Poe turned it into a bi-monthly magazine with hundreds of listings.
In an industry where a business continuously needs a strong sales team, the Wire Rope Exchange was an innovative concept. The printed newsletter was an ideal marketing tool since it was easy to create, circulate, and access. A company could reach hundreds – or later, thousands – of potential buyers in only the time it took to create and place a listing. As Pat Poe expressed it, “I didn’t have a huge sales force – we created the Exchange to become the sales team I needed. Over the years, it’s done just that.”
Initially, subscribers would phone or mail in their listings, and interested buyers would call the Exchange office to be put in touch with the sellers. In the 1990s, the Wire Rope Exchange adopted what was then cutting-edge technology: instead of phoning in their listings, subscribers could fax them in. Eventually, the Wire Rope Exchange became a communications network within the industry, in addition to a marketing resource. It included not only product listings, but also relevant articles about new businesses, products and services, training and technology topics, global trends, and industry announcements.
The Wire Rope Exchange also expanded to utilize digital media through its website, launched in 2000. The website put more control directly into the sellers’ hands, since they could add or delete listings themselves. Buyers could search through the listings online and contact the sellers directly without having to go through the central office.
Today:
The new website design offers more to all its subscribers, both listing members and users searching to buy products. For listers, the new design has a number of features that make it a more efficient and powerful sales resource. Beyond just including basic contact information, listers can create a public profile and “storefront” that can link customers to the lister’s website and can be shared through email. The new storefront feature can include a customized business description, and can easily accommodate company logos and banner advertising. Listers can also place their high-priority products at the top of a search category as a “featured” listing. Photos can be uploaded and photo boards created for any listing.
Buyers benefit from a more customizable, easy-to-use search function. All subscribers are now able to read the Wire Rope Exchange magazine digitally on the website, and see the latest industry-related news.
For over a quarter century, the Wire Rope Exchange has continued to grow. Currently, it reaches over 5,000 companies in more than 40 countries. The Exchange began by showing the industry a new way of bringing companies together, offering good product values, and providing relevant information. Through its new website, the Wire Rope Exchange makes its marketplace more effective, its community hub more informative, and will continue to be one of the industry’s most innovative and useful tools.voir moins
