DCPs
Div Commanders, Branch Officers
Members of the Mauritius Police Force
Ladies & Gentlemen
My greetings to you all... A very good
morning ..... I truly consider it a privilege
and honour to be here to witness this august
occasion of Promotion Ceremony as we
celebrate the career advancement and
accomplishments of few bright, vigorous
and promising men and women of the
Mauritius Police force who have taken a step
further to shoulder responsibility. I take this
opportunity to congratulate all 353
personnel present here and 23 in Rodrigues
(who at this time are receiving their letters
of offer from the hands of Mr Appadoo,
DCP).
They have made it
Page 1 of 8They have made it to the rank of sergeant
with their dedication, efforts and
perseverance. It is truly a remarkable
achievement and while acknowledging so, I
would like to ask each of you in attendance
to give them a round of applause as a token
of appreciation.......
"Plenty of men can do good work for a spurt
and immediate promotion in mind, but the
universe chooses the ones worthy of
promotion in whom the good work has
become a habit."
I say HABIT because each of you has the
opportunity to shape your habits ..... by your
deeds, ..... by your choices and last but not
the least.....by your Integrity and Bravery.
Ladies and Gentlemen.....
Page 2 of 8Ladies and Gentlemen.......
Integrity and Bravery are the two main
qualities required of a good Police Officer. I
must say it gives me great honour to be the
Commissioner of the Mauritius Police Force
where Integrity and Bravery are being
displayed every now and then.
Just to state a few... on 27" March 2016, a
young Police Constable posted to Tombeau
Bay Police refused to take bribe to offset a
contravention... this is Integrity. The money
would have vanished and evaporated, but
the legacy and the story of his integrity will
prevail for eternity.
Ladies and Gentlemen.....
Page 3 of 8Ladies and Gentlemen.....
On 16 January 2016, a Police Constable
posted to Prosecutor’s Office Rose Hill,
being in a shop coincidently witnessed two
miscreants attempting to rob the shop
keeper, the Police Constable putting his life
at risk ultimately makes them run away for
their lives... that is Bravery.....
vee On 29'" March 2016, another Police
Constable posted to the SSU, on being off
duty chases a thief on foot leaving his girl
friend behind and catches him by his
neck.....that is also Bravery.....
Let me remind you that
Page 4 of 8Let me remind you that we make a living
by what we get, but we make a life by what
we give.....the benevolent and voluntary act
of giving from within your little share is
called Courage. It takes courage to lessen
your desires and help others in need. I am
very proud to witness some Police officers
displaying humanity, part of it by doing
social work and charity with their share of
small salary.
A vivid example....personnel of Vacoas
Police who on 17" January 2016 offered a
lunch paid from their pockets to residents of
a care home. Sometimes you can do very
little to help others but that little act of
kindness done by _ you..... may act
enormously at times.
We are men and women
Page 5 of 8We are men and women in uniform, this
is our legacy and this is our story.
We all have a story.....Something that defines
or describes Who you are ..... and ..... Where
you are going. And major pages of your story
is usually written and developed by your
family, friends and well wishers. Their
contribution in your success as support,
wish and prayers cannot be quantified by
any ways and means and a little you can do
is to appreciate them for their efforts and
support to make you climb the ladder.
I take this opportunity to thank all family
members, friends and well wishers present
here today for their immeasurable
contribution in success of their family
members and success of the Mauritius
Police Force.
My dear fellow officers,
Page 6 of 8My dear fellow officers, I also have in
mind those who could not get through the
promotional exams.....thou shalt not lose
focus, thou shalt come again and be
victorious. Keep working hard, Success will
be at your door steps.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I will like to
conclude with an African Proverb that says,
“Every morning in Africa, an antelope wakes
up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion,
or it will be killed.
Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It
knows it must run faster than the slowest
antelope, or it will starve.
My Dear fellows... It doesn’t matter
whether you're the lion or an antelope -
when the sun comes up, keep running
towards your goal.”
Thank you very much.
