When Dev Anand met Charlie Chaplin

Dev Anand was a huge fan of the great actor and got a chance to meet him while Chaplin was residing
in Switzerland after the American government termed him a leftist and asked him to leave the country. True to his style, Chaplin took up residence in a villa and called it his white house. When an Indian delegation including Dev Anand paid the actor a visit at his villa, Anand, who'd seen Chaplin's film The Great Dictator during his college days and admired it, couldn't help but exclaim, 'Hail Chaplin!' with his arm raised like Nazi soldiers. Chaplin laughed and added jokingly, 'Welcome to my white house!' 2. Meeting with other world cinema greats

Dev Anand was very well connected internationally too.


While he collaborated with the likes of nobel prize winner Pearl S Buck and Shirley Maclaine, he also had the privilege of making acquaintance with It's A Wonderful Life director Frank Capra when he came to attend India's first ever international film festival in Bombay and Italian filmmaker Vittorio de Sica (who made Bicycle Thieves) in Rome

3. When he was mistaken for a taxi driver

While shooting for his film Taxi Driver, Dev Anand was offloading a passenger in front of The Taj Mahal
hotel. As soon as the take was over, a foreigner hastily got in the cab and asked the actor to take him to the 'Red Light District'. It took several seconds for the wonderstruck man to recover when he was told about the star status of the 'cabbie'. 4. First trip abroad

Dev Anand's first trip was to Venice when he accompanied elder brother Chetan Anand for the
screening of their film Aandhiyan. 5. His earliest role model

Dev Anand's first role model was his elder brother Chetan Anand.
Chetan had studied in London and was a man of intellect and refined tastes. While Dev Anand eventually grew out of his shadow, his early acting efforts were inspired by his elder brother's mannerisms.

The late star played tennis for his college and participated in inter-college tournaments but was, by his

Dev Anand threw his famous beret at the crowd of eager fans at Swastik theatre when he emerged from

His daughter, who he completely doted on, was named after his own and wife Kalpana Karthik's (her

Dev Anand and Geeta Bali met with an accident while driving down from Malwan to Mumbai.
Dr Sreeram Lagoo, who was then a doctor at Pune's Sassoon Hospital, was one of the doctors who treated Devsaab. 10. Dev Anand's third brother

Apart from Chetan and Vijay Anand, Dev Anand had an elder brother Manmohan Anand, who was an
advocate at the Gurdaspur District Court. 11. Received an award from Hillary Clinton

Dev Anand was conferred upon the 'Outstanding Contribution to Indian Cinema' award by the current US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in July 2000.
12. Last film with Suraiya

Dev Anand and Suraiya worked together in seven films -- Vidya (1948), Jeet (1949), Shair (1949), Afsar
(1950), Nili (1950), Do Sitare (1951) and Sanam (1951), all of which were successful at the box office. Do Sitare was the last film in which they appeared together.

13. Acted in just one two-hero film

The only two-hero film Dev Anand acted in was Insaniyat in 1955 with costaring his contemporary Dilip
Kumar. 14. No actresses wanted to play his sister

Actresses were just interested in playing his love interest.


Many actresses turned down the role of Jasbir in Hare Ram Hare Krishna before Zeenat Aman was roped in to play the grown-up Jasbir in the film. 15. Dev Anand and his driver

Dev Anand's 56-year-old driver Prem Shripath Dubey, who's worked for the late star for 33 years, claims
that he's started talking like his late employer. 16. His first brush with romance

The first girl he was ever attracted to was Usha Chopra, an Anglo-Indian girl who was an undergraduate
student in the same Lahore college Dev Anand was studying in. 17. His first brush with direction

While acting in Teen Deviyan, Dev Anand was also ghost-writing and directing the film for his friend
Amarjeet, a publicist with Navketan, his home production company. Incidentally, Amarjeet's Hum Dono was ghost-directed by Vijay Anand. 18. Jaal was inspired from an Italian film

Jaal was inspired from an Italian film titled Bitter Rice.


Dev Anand had accompanied Guru Dutt to watch the film when the filmmaker proclaimed that he would base his next film on it. Dev Anand was equally inspired by the thought and Dutt cast him in the film opposite Geeta Bali. 19. Mumtaz was offered Zeenat Aman's role in Hare Rama Hare Krishna

Zeenat Aman's role in Hare Ram Hare Krishna was originally offered to Mumtaz but she rejected it as
she was acting with Dev Anand as his love interest in several films. As Zeenat was playing Dev saab's sister in the film, it would have looked odd. Mumtaz played his love interest once again in this film.

20. Dev Anand owned 800 jackets

The late actor was known for his flambouyant personality that reflected in his outfits.
He owned 800 jackets and his favourite colours were yellow, brown and black. He wore red once in a while. 21. Hema Malini worked for free in Jaaneman

Hema Malini, his leading lady in many films, and actor Premnath worked for free in Dev Anand's film
Jaaneman. The film was directed by Chetan Anand. 22. Admired actress Snehaprabha Pradhan

One of the early actressses that Dev Anand admired was Snehprabha Pradhan.
He later got a chance to work with her in Jagirdas's Birha Ki Raat. 23. Similarities with Gregory Peck

Dev Anand was often compared to Hollywood superstar Gregory Peck. He was even said to have
cultivated the latter's mannerisms and dressing style. It's a coincidence, that both died at the age of 88. 24. First Navketan film

The first film made under Navketan was Afsar which was directed by Chetan Anand and and starred Dev
Anand and Suraiya in the lead. The film was based on the play The Inspector General by Nikolai Gogol, a satire on corruption in a small town. Chetan Anand had done a stage play on the same story for IPTA (Indian People's Theatre Association). 25. Met with an accident while shooting Jaal

While traveling for the shooting of the film Jaal, Dev Anand and Geeta Bali were involved in a car crash.

Dev Anand and Suraiya met Gregory Peck for the first time at Mumbai's Willingdon Club, after the
Filmfare Awards in 1954. Peck had a stopover in the city from a schedule at Sri Lanka after shooting for Purple Plane. 39. Shared a chawl room with three people When Dev Anand arrived in Mumbai, he did not have enough money to even eat. When a jobless Balraj Sahni approached Dev Anand, the actor/director took him onboard to write the
dialogues and screenplay for Baazi as Sahni's grasp on Hindi was really good. 43. His pact with Guru Dutt

The Guru Dutt-Dev Anand friendship was known to all.


They made a pact that all of Guru Dutt's films will have Dev Anand as the lead and all of Dev Anand's films will be directed by Guru Dutt. They kept their promise. Dev Anand gave Guru Dutt a break with Baazi in 1951. They went on to do two more films, CID and Jaal. 44. Guru Dutt's death

When Guru Dutt died in 1964, Dev Anand was shooting for Teen Deviyaan.

Dev Anand never went on funerals and never mourned anyone's death.

It was Dev Anand who asked Sunil Dutt to try his luck in films.
Sunil Dutt and Dev Anand both hailed from Lahore, and so they called each other Graen (one belonging to the same). Dev Anand was the first person to whom Sunil Dutt broke the news of his wedding with Nargis. 50. His directorial debut was Prem Pujari

She was under this ceiling when Dev Anand was casting for the film. He not only fought with everyone, but threw down the gauntlet by flying her out to Kathmandu with police protection. 59. It is said that Dev Anand had refused to star in Zanjeer, which turned out to be Amitabh Bachchan's big
break. One of the reasons, it is believed, was the lack of a duet with the heroine. 61. Dev Anand was asked not to wear black

After Dev Anand's hit Kala Pani, the actor was asked not to wear a black suit in public because women
would swoon and jump from buildings seeing him dressed in black. 62. Saved Suraiya from a capsized boat and fell in love

The Dev-Suraiya romance began when shooting the film Vidya.

While filming the song Kinare kinare chale jaayenge on a boat, the boat capsized. Living up to his heroic image, Dev rescued her and wanted to marry her. 63. Proposed to Suraiya with a diamond ring worth Rs. 3000

Dev proposed to Suraiya on the sets of the film Jeet with a diamond ring worth Rs 3,000, but Suraiya's
maternal grandmother was strongly opposed to the inter-religious romance. As a result Suraiya remained unmarried all her life. 64. Started looking for solo roles for stardom

During his successful run with Suraiya -- with hits like Vidya, Jeet, Shair, Afsar, Nili, Do Sitare and

Few know that the film Tere Mere Sapne, featuring Dev and Mumtaz and directed by Vijay Anand, was
an adaptation of AJ Cronin's novel, The Citadel. The film was yet another massive Dev Anand success. 71. Hare Ram Hare Krishna helped a father reconcile with his runaway daughter

Apart from bringing attention to the booming hippie culture of the 1970s, Dev Anand's Hare Rama Hare
Krishna helped an estranged father, living in the US, reconcile with his runaway daughter after he spotted her in one of the song sequences and traced her whereabouts. 72. Bought the iconic chekered cap in Denmark

The iconic, checkered print cap worn by Dev Anand in Jewel Thief was purchased from a shop in
Copenhagen, Denmark where he was filming Pyar Mohabbat with Saira Bano. 73. Turned down Junglee and Teesri Manzil

Dev Anand was the original choice for both -- Subodh Mukherjee's Junglee and Nasir Hussain's Teesri
Manzil. Owing to differences with the makers, however, he turned down both the offers. Dev's loss turned out to be Shammi Kapoor's gain since both films turned out to be milestones in the recently deceased Yahoo star's career. 74. Bagged Filmfare best actor award for Kalapani and Guide

75. Married Kalpana Karthik while working on Taxi Driver

Dev Anand tied the knot with his leading lady, Kalpana Kartik while they were still working on Taxi
Driver. The duo opted for a discreet registered marriage over an elaborate ceremony. 76. Films closest to his heart

Among the 100 plus films he has worked on, Guide, Hare Ram Hare Krishna, Des Pardes and Hum
Dono are closest to his heart. 77. Chance meeting with Gregory Peck

While in Rome, Dev Anand bumped into Gregory Peck, the Hollywood star he was relentlessly
compared to, on the sets of Roman Holiday. Incidentally, Peck was filming the legendary Spanish Steps sequence with co-star Audrey Hepburn. 78. Admired Ashok Kumar

He may have drawn comparisons with Gregory Peck but it is Ashok Kumar he truly admired.
Dev Anand aspired to become a performer in Dadamoni's class, awed by his work in films like Achhut Kanya and Kismat. Later on, the senior star signed up Dev to play a romantic role in Ziddi opposite top heroine, Kamini Kaushal. The film was a bona fide hit and launched Dev Anand into the big league. 79. After attaining a degree in Bachelor of Arts from Lahore Government College, in pre-Independence
India, Dev Anand made a failed attempt to procure admission in the Royal Indian Navy. His father then proposed his son seek a clerical position in an office. 83. Worked as a clerk before movies happened

During his struggling days in Mumbai, Dev Anand worked as a clerk in an accountancy firm for a meager
salary of Rs 85 to make ends meet. 84. Bought his first car after debut film

Did you know Pakistani cricketer Imran Khan was Dev Anand's original choice for the role of Ronnie, an
arrogant, waning player in Awwal Number co-starring Aamir Khan? Khan declined and the part went to Aditya Panscholi. 87. Launched many popular actors and actresses

Besides creating some unforgettable classics, Dev Anand is responsible for giving break to renowned
stars like Shatrughan Sinha (Prem Pujari), Zeenat Aman (Hare Rama Hare Krishna), Zarina Wahab (Ishq Ishq Ishq), Jackie Shroff (Heera Panna), Tina Munim (Des Pardes) and Tabu (Hum Naujawan). 88. Had a great sense of visuals

Other than a keen ear for music, Dev Anand is all about striking visuals.
A lot of his films have been shot abroad in countries like England ( Prem Pujari, Des Pardes), Nepal (Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Johnny Mera Naam, Ishq Ishq Ishq), Denmark (Pyaar Ka Tarana) and Scotland (Main Solah Baras Ki).
