PLAY CALLING
RUN PLAYS:
- We use a traditional version of run play calling. Words signify formations and
blocking scheme, and numbers signify the ball carrier and point of attack. This
example play is “RED—28 Buck”.
- Formation: RED.
- Ball carrier: 2—the J-back.
- POA: 8—off the HB's block in a wing position.
- Blocking: Buck.
BACK NUMBERING:
- Each back is assigned a number to denote when they are the ball carrier. has a
specific backfield action designed to affect the defense differently. The numbers do
not change even if the formation changes.
- 1—the Quarterback
- 2—the J-back (left halfback).
- 3—the Z-back (right halfback).
- 4—the F-back (fullback).
POINT OF ATTACK:
- We use a traditional (also known as “American”) numbering system, with the points
of attack numbered 0 to 9. Even numbers signify runs to the right, and odd numbers
signify runs to the left. Lower numbers signify inside runs, and larger numbers
signify outside runs.
- The point of attack corresponds to a specific player—the ball carrier and other
blockers read the block at the point of attack to determine their path. (Note: we use
the same numbers for 11-man football running plays, despite a different POA.)

PASS PLAYS:
- We use a somewhat non-traditional version of pass play calling. Words signify all
aspects of the play—formation, blocking scheme, back actions, play direction, and
receiver route combinations if applicable. This example play is “Right—Waggle Pass
Left”.
- Formation: RED.
- Blocking: Waggle (Pass).
- Direction: Left.
