Liturgical notes

The “great priest” referred to in this text is Christ, the great High Priest. The text
is drawn from various verses in the book of Ecclesiastes (sometimes known as
Sirach), a book from the Deuterocanonical books of the Old Testament, which were
written down only in Greek, never in Hebrew. It resonates with the Letter to the
Hebrews, in which Christ as our High Priest is a central theme. Christ is also the
High Priest at every Eucharistic liturgy; consider using this text as a catechetical
means to emphasize this.
Since the bishop is considered the sign of the high priesthood of Christ (see
Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 41), this text has been associated with rites
connected to the episcopacy, such as the days dedicated to bishop confessors in the
Liturgy of the Hours and the Mass. It also came to be used as an entrance antiphon
on any occasion for which a bishop was present.

Translation

Behold a Great Priest, who through his days has pleased God: Therefore, as the
Lord has promised, he has been made to increase among his people. God has given
the blessing of the nations to him and confirmed the covenant upon his head.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
