Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg

(Walther's Prize Song)

The only comedy among Wagner’s mature works, Die Meistersinger- a music
drama in three acts- was conceived in 1845.  The libretto was written by
Wagner in January 1862 and the composition began in March or April of the
same year. It took five more years before the full score was completed in
October 1867.
 
This is a monumental work dedicated to the value of art, talent and
humanity. It is Wagner’s only work set in a well-defined historical time and
place with no supernatural powers or events. The action in the opera is
centered around a song contest organized by the local guild of Meistersingers
(Master Singers).

The arrangement below is a final version of the prize song performed by the
main character, Walther von Stolzing. It is an example of one of the most
beautiful tenor arias in the repertoire and now it receives its rendition on the
flute.
