PERFORMANCE NOTES:
1) All repeats should be played the number of times specified above that individual measure.
(i.e. (2x) (3x) etc...)
2) All 8th notes in all parts are of equal duration throughout.
3) The piece should sound driven, as in a moto-perpetuo. The energy level should be high and
consistent from beginning to end.
4) Instrument ranges may be altered if necessary. However, care should be taken that large form
rhythmic figures which are accented by range are still clear when ranges are changed.
5) If possible, the piece should be performed by three instruments or sets of instruments of similar
timbre.
(i.e. 3 metalic instruments, or 3 sets of metallic instruments like Gongs, Almglocken,
and Glockenspiel, 3 wood wind instruments, 3 brass instruments etc...)
mixed ensembles are also acceptable however. experiment with different sound possibilities.
6)

Performances should be as fast as possible, but no faster. Do not push beyond the performers
ability to perform comfortably and with ease.

7)

Time must be strict and unwaivering throughout.

Program Notes:

Points of Departure is a piece utilizing a system of composition

through a series of 'lenses.' This is to say that this piece presents
simple and repeated melodic material which is then re-invisioned
by ever shifting lenses. How we percieve three repeating notes
may change based on dynamic, rhythmic placement, timbre, or
even harmonic context. Within this composition, all possible
references to simple repeating cells are played with, and a wide
pallette of musical possibility is thus revealed.
