3 In the palace gardens, Ines, the
confidante of the Queen of Aragon’s lady-
in-waiting Leonora, asks her companion
why she lingers so late. She waits for a
man she crowned victor in a tournament,
she tells her.
4 One night, a voice arose upon the silent
air — that of the unknown, victorious
troubadour, causing her heart to overflow
with joy.
5 Her love is so deep that she would die
without him. They leave.
6 The Count, in love with Leonora,
enters, aware that she is still awake.
As he prepares to go to her, he hears

nearby the sound of a lute.
7 The troubadour, Manrico, is singing of
his love. Leonora rushes in, mistaking
the cloaked Count for Manrico and
embracing him.
8 Suddenly Manrico arrives, accusing her
of infidelity. Realising her error, she throws
herself at his feet. The Count demands his
name: he gives it, though he is of the
enemy cause. The Count challenges him.
The two move off to fight.
Part 2: The Gipsy
9 In the mountains, gipsies gather around
a fire. They take up their tools and hammer
at their anvils.
0 The old gipsy Azucena recalls the
dreadful day when her mother was burned,
and her dying cry for her daughter to
avenge her.
! Manrico asks Azucena whether she did
so. She goes on to describe how she stole
the Count’s child and threw him on the fire.
But in her confusion she burned her own
child instead!
@ Speechless, Manrico asks who he is.
Azucena backtracks. He is her true son and
she a loving mother, who searched for him
on the battlefield when he was left for dead
by the Count’s men. Yet he, in single
combat with the Count, spared his life!
£ Manrico recalls that when the Count was
at his mercy, he heard a heavenly voice
telling him not to strike. A message is
delivered, ordering Manrico to Castellor and
informing him that Leonora, believing him
dead, is about to take the veil. He prepares
to leave immediately.
$ Azucena warns him that his wounds
have not yet healed. Manrico ignores her
and goes.
% In the courtyard of the convent, the
Count, too, has arrived to intervene.
^ He sings of his deep love for Leonora.
A bell announces the nuns. The Count and
his men hide.
& Leonora says farewell to the tearful Ines.
Suddenly, the Count rushes out. Then — to
universal shock — Manrico appears.
* Leonora cannot believe her eyes. The
two men confront each other. Manrico’s
men arrive and disarm the Count. Manrico
and Leonora leave.
Part 3: The Gipsy’s Son
( At the Count’s encampment near
Castellor, his soldiers are playing dice.
) They look forward to the battle ahead.
¡ Still seething at Manrico’s abduction
of Leonora, the Count vows to separate
them. Ferrando announces that a gipsy
has been caught nearby. Azucena is brought
in. Questioned, her mention of Biscay
arouses suspicions.
™ Ferrando recognises her. Her desperate
cry for her son Manrico to save her seals
her fate.
# By the chapel in Castellor, Manrico warns
Leonora that the enemy attack is imminent,
casting a cloud over their wedding.
¢ If he should die in battle, his final
thought shall be of her.
∞ Suddenly, his comrade Ruiz brings news
of Azucena’s plight. A pyre has been lit.
Admitting to Leonora that Azucena is his
mother, he sends Ruiz to gather his men.
§ He will save his mother or die.

Part 4: The Execution
¶ Manrico’s attack failed. Leonora and Ruiz
arrive beneath the tower where he is
imprisoned. Leonora has a plan to release
him and a ring containing poison should
she succeed.
• She asks that the sound of her sighs
might comfort him in his cell.
ª Monks chant a prayer for the dying.
Manrico’s voice sounds from the tower,
singing farewell to Leonora.
º She prepares to save his life at the cost
of her own.
⁄ Having given orders for Manrico’s and
Azucena’s executions, the Count emerges.
¤ Leonora steps forward and pleads
for Manrico.
‹ Her pleas are to no avail. Finally, she
offers herself to the Count if he releases
Manrico. The Count agrees.
› Leonora is jubilant that Manrico
will survive.
fi In their dismal cell, Manrico tries to
comfort his mother.
fl She longs for them to leave for their
mountain home.
‡ Leonora enters, urging Manrico to leave
immediately. She must stay behind.
° Guessing the bargain she has made, he
rejects her.
· As her poison takes effect, Leonora sinks
down. Manrico realises what she has done.
‚ The Count enters and realises that he
has been tricked. He sends Manrico off to
instant execution, calling on Azucena to
observe his fate. When the blow is struck,
she announces to the Count that Manrico
was his brother.

ARGUMENT
Première Partie : Le Duel
1 Au palais d'Aliaferia, Ferrando, le
capitaine du Comte de Luna, tient ses
troupes éveillées en leur contant l'histoire
du frère du Comte.
2 Le père du Comte avait deux fils. Un
jour, une vieille gitane fut découverte en
train de jeter un sort au cadet dans son
berceau. La sorcière fut brûlée, mais sa fille
enleva le fils du vieux comte et l'on retrouva
les restes d'un enfant dans les cendres
du bûcher.
3 Dans les jardins du palais, Ines, la
confidente de Leonora, la dame d’honneur de
la reine d'Aragon, demande à sa compagne
pourquoi elle veille si tard. Elle lui répond
qu'elle attend celui qu'elle a couronné
comme vainqueur lors d'un tournoi.
4 Une nuit, une voix s'est élevée dans
l'air silencieux : c'était celle du trouvère
victorieux dont elle ne savait pas le nom, et
la joie a envahi son cœur.
5 Son amour est si profond que sans son
bien-aimé, elle mourrait. Elles sortent.
6 Le Comte, qui est épris de Leonora,
entre, se doutant qu'elle veille encore. Alors

du poison.
• Elle aimerait que le son de ses soupirs
monte jusqu'à sa cellule pour le réconforter.
ª Des moines entonnent une oraison
funèbre. On entend la voix de Manrico qui
vient de la tour et chante ses adieux
à Leonora.
º Elle se prépare à sacrifier sa vie pour
sauver celle de son bien-aimé.
⁄ Le Comte paraît : il vient d'ordonner que
Manrico et Azucena soient exécutés.
¤ Leonora s'avance et plaide pour la vie
de Manrico.
‹ Ses prières sont vaines. Finalement, elle
offre au Comte de se donner à lui s'il libère
Manrico. Le Comte accepte.
› Leonora se réjouit à l'idée que Manrico
va être sauvé.
fi Dans un sinistre cachot, Manrico tente
de réconforter sa mère.
fl Elle donnerait tout pour qu'ils puissent
retrouver leurs montagnes.
‡ Leonora entre, pressant Manrico pour
qu'il parte tout de suite. Elle va devoir rester
en arrière.
° Devinant le marché qu'elle a passé, il
la maudit.
· Tandis que le poison qu'elle a avalé
commence à faire son effet, Leonora
défaille. Manrico réalise ce qu'elle a fait.
Elle rend l'âme.
‚ Le Comte entre et comprend qu'il a été
dupé. Il envoie immédiatement Manrico à la
mort, et s'assure qu'Azucena assiste à
l'exécution de la fenêtre. Une fois Manrico
tué, elle révèle au Comte, horrifié, que le
trouvère était son frère.

Erster Teil: Der Zweikampf
1 Im Schloss Aliaferia erzählt Ferrando, ein
Hauptmann des Grafen von Luna, den
wachenden Soldaten und Dienern die
Geschichte vom Bruder seines Dienstherrn.
2 Der alte Graf hatte zwei Söhne. Eines
Tages erschien an der Wiege des jüngeren
Kinds eine Zigeunerin, die es verhexte.
Dafür wurde sie verbrannt. Aus Rache ent-
führte ihre Tochter einen der Grafensöhne;
an der Hinrichtungsstätte fand man später
die halbverbrannte Leiche eines Kindes.
3 In den Palastgärten fragt Ines, die
Vertraute Leonores, einer Hofdame der
Königin von Aragon, worauf sie wartet.
Es ist der Held, den sie zum Sieger des
Turniers geschmückt hat.
4 Sie hat einmal des Nachts ein Lied
gehört — gesungen von einem unbe-
kannten, siegreichen Troubadour, der ihr
Herz vor Freude überfließen ließ.
5 Ihre Liebe ist so tief, dass sie ohne ihn
sterben würde. Sie geht.
6 Der in Leonora verliebte Graf erscheint.
Er hat bemerkt, dass sie sich noch nicht zur
Ruhe begeben hat, und will sie aufsuchen,
als er den Klang einer Laute vernimmt.
7 Der Troubadour, Manrico, singt ein
Ständchen. Leonora eilt herbei, hält den
Grafen in seinem Mantel für Manrico und
umarmt ihn.
8 Plötzlich erscheint Manrico und bezichtigt
sie der Untreue. Sie erkennt ihren Irrtum
und wirft sich ihm zu Füßen. Der Graf
verlangt seinen Namen; Manrico gibt sich
zu erkennen, obwohl er auf Feindesseite
steht. Der Graf fordert ihn heraus. Die
beiden gehen zum Duell ab.
Zweiter Teil: Die Zigeunerin
9 In den Bergen lagern Zigeuner an einem
Feuer. Sie schlagen mit Hämmern auf
ihre Ambosse.
0 Die alte Zigeunerin Azucena erinnert an
den schrecklichen Tag, als ihre Mutter auf
dem Scheiterhaufen starb und mit ihrem
Todesruf die Tochter zur Rache aufforderte.
! Manrico fragt Azucena, ob sie dem Ruf
gefolgt ist. Sie erzählt, wie sie den Sohn
des Grafen raubte und in die Flammen warf.
Doch sie war verstört und verwechselte das
Kind mit ihrem eigenen!
@ Fassungslos will Manrico wissen, wer er
ist. Azucena weicht der Frage aus. Er ist ihr
Sohn; sie, seine liebende Mutter, hat ihn —
von den gräflichen Truppen für tot gehalten
— auf dem Schlachtfeld gefunden und
gesundgepflegt. Doch im Duell hat er dem
Grafen das Leben geschenkt!
£ Manrico erzählt, dass er im entscheiden-
den Moment durch eine Stimme vom Himmel
aufgefordert wurde, den Feind zu schonen.
Ein Bote kommt mit einem Brief, in dem
Manrico nach Castellor beordert wird; zugleich
erfährt er, dass Leonora, die ihn tot glaubt, im
Begriff steht, ins Kloster zu gehen. Manrico
bereitet sich auf die sofortige Abreise vor.
$ Azucena warnt ihn, dass seine Wunden
noch nicht verheilt sind. Manrico schenkt
dem keine Beachtung und geht.
% Im Klosterkreuzgang erscheint der Graf,
um ebenfalls einzugreifen.
^ Er bekennt Leonora seine tiefe Liebe.
Eine Glocke kündigt die nahenden Nonnen
an. Der Graf und seine Leute verstecken sich.
& Leonora nimmt Abschied von der
weinenden Ines. Plötzlich tritt der Graf
hervor. Kurz darauf — zum allgemeinen
Erstaunen — gefolgt von Manrico.
* Leonora mag ihren Augen nicht trauen.
Die beiden Männer treten sich entgegen.
Manricos Leute erscheinen und entwaffnen
den Grafen. Manrico und Leonora gehen.
Dritter Teil: Der Sohn der Zigeunerin
( Im Heerlager des Grafen bei Castellor sind
seine Soldaten ins Spiel vertieft.
) Sie sehen der bevorstehenden Schlacht
entgegen.
¡ Immer noch wutentbrannt darüber, dass
Manrico ihm Leonora entrissen hat, schwört
der Graf Rache. Ferrando meldet, dass
nahebei eine Zigeunerin festgenommen
worden ist. Azucena wird herbeigeführt. Als
sie gesteht, aus Biscaya zu kommen,
schöpft der Graf Verdacht.
™ Ferrando erkennt sie. Ihr verzweifelter
Ruf, dass ihr Manrico beistehen möge,
besiegelt ihr Schicksal.
# An der Kapelle in der Festung Castellor
warnt Manrico Leonora, dass der feindliche
Angriff unmittelbar bevorsteht. Ein Schatten
liegt über der Hochzeit.
¢ Selbst wenn er im Kampf fallen sollte,
werden seine letzten Gedanken ihr gehören.
∞ Plötzlich bringt sein Gefolgsmann Ruiz

Leonora, dass Azucena seine Mutter ist, und
lässt seine Leute von Ruiz zu Hilfe holen.
§ Er will seine Mutter retten oder sterben.
Vierter Teil: Das Hochgericht
¶ Manricos scheitert mit seinem Ausfall.
Leonora und Ruiz kommen an den Turm, in
dem er eingekerkert ist. Leonora hofft, ihn
befreien zu können; für sich selbst hat sie
einen Ring mit Gift.
• Ihr sehnsuchtsvolles Seufzen soll ihm in
seiner Zelle Trost spenden.
ª Mönche singen ein Miserere. Manricos
Stimme erklingt aus dem Turm: Er singt
seinen Abschied von Leonora.
º Sie ist bereit, ihr Leben um seinetwillen
zu opfern.
⁄ Der Graf hat die Hinrichtung Manricos
und Azucenas angeordnet und tritt hervor.
¤ Leonora erscheint und fleht um Gnade
für Manrico.
‹ Der Graf bleibt unerbittlich. Schließlich
bietet sie ihm an, sich ihm hinzugeben,
wenn er Manrico die Freiheit schenkt. Der
Graf willigt ein.
› Leonora ist überglücklich: Manrico
wird leben.
fi Im Kerker versucht Manrico, seine
Mutter zu trösten.
fl Sie sehnt sich nach der Heimat.
‡ Leonora erscheint und drängt Manrico,
sich sofort in Sicherheit zu bringen. Sie
muss zurückbleiben.
° Er ahnt, um welchen Preis sie ihn
gerettet hat.
· Langsam nimmt das Gift seine Wirkung,
und Leonora sinkt nieder. Manrico begreift,
was sie getan hat.
‚ Der Graf tritt ein und erkennt, dass er
getäuscht worden ist. Er lässt Manrico
unverzüglich hinrichten und zwingt Azucena,
den Todesschlag mitzuerleben. In dem
Moment wirft sie dem Grafen entgegen,
dass Manrico sein Bruder war.
