The adverbial pronoun replaces a noun. It has many possible translations:
• some, one, any
• about it / them • of it / them Par exemple…
– Voulez-vous du café ? – Do you want
some coffee? – Instead of saying : J’ai déjà du café (I already have – I already have coffee), I can say : some. – J’en ai déjà. (to avoid repetition)
– Combien d’enfants as-tu ? – How many kids
do you have? – Instead of saying : Je n’ai pas d’enfants (I don’t – I don’t have any. have children), I can say : – Je n’en ai pas. (to avoid repetition)
En with indefinite and partitive articles
En replaces an indefinite or partitive article plus a noun.
Par exemple…
Il cherche des idées. He’s looking for ideas.
> Il en cherche. (En replaces « des idées ») > He’s looking for some (of them).
Tu manges des épinards ? Are you eating spinach?
> Tu en manges ?(en replaces « des épinards ») > Are you eating some (of it)?
