A year in a foreign country

Lena Sernyak
My name is Lena Sernyak. It happened
that I was an exchange student last year.
I was a student of the Rotary
International Program . Rotary
International is an organization of
service clubs, known as Rotary Clubs
located all over the world. The stated
purpose of the organization is to bring
together business and professional
leaders to provide humanitarian service,
encourage high ethical standards in all
vocations, and help build goodwill and
peace in the world. It is a secular
organization open to all persons
regardless of race, color, creed, gender,
or political preference.
Rotary youth exchange program is an
integral part of Rotary International. To
get into this program you need to fill the
application, then you wait for a little
while and if you are lucky they will
choose you and you are free to go and to
experience the world.

My dream was to go to the USA,

but unfortunately I didnt get to
pick a place to go.( state) So it
happened that I ended up in the
state of MAINE.
Before I came to Belfast, Maine, I
have never thought about what
being an exchange student really
was. I was a little bit scared
because I didnt know what to
expect from it. But luckily I had
the chance to stay with three
amazing families. My host
families were the best people I
have ever known. This people
were very kind and nice to me,
they considered me as their real
daughter. They helped me to adjust
and made this year so much easier
for me. I will never be able to say
Thank you enough times for
what they did for me.

I should not forget about Belfast

High School. Being in an
American High School was
unbelievable, it seemed that I got
into an American movie with
lockers, cheerleaders, boys from
a football and baseball team.

The first part of the year I had an

opportunity to practice one of my favorite
hobbies - skiing . I skied almost every day,
first of all because it is quiet cold over there
and winter starts very early and second of
all because I lived about 20 min form the
ski resort. During the second part of the
year I traveled a lot. I was in Hawaii,
Boston (Massachusetts), Las Vegas
(Nevada), Sanfransisco , Los Angeles,
Beverly hills ( California) , Grand Canyon
(Arizona)

In school I took 8 classes:

English, French, World War 2,
Guitar class, Jewelry class, Art
class, American History and
Biology.

What a wonderful opportunity I was

given, from both the Rotary club and
my family, to spread my wings, taste
the culture, and live the life. I think
that being an exchange student was
one of the best things
I have ever experienced because, for
one hole year, in spite of myself, I
was special, different, new, even
when I didnt want to be. Being an
exchange student taught me a lot
about America and a lot about
myself.
I thought that the beginning was
going to be difficult but I was not.

Everything went
smoothly. I made new
friends, met so many
affable people, who
always gave me hand
and supported me.
Being an exchange
student it is the best way
to revise the outlook on
life and to get a life
experience which will
last forever.
