A Blackfoot Story
(English Version)
Today, Kkonaa is on her way to a big family dinner at her Naahs house. When Kkonaa enters the
house, her senses are invaded by the comforting smells of bison stew, cooked vegetables, boiled
potatoes and the lingering aroma of mint tea. She runs to her Naaahs and gives her a big hug. She is
excited to be with all her family. Her Naahs smiles warmly and tells her to go find her cousins who are
all playing outside. The recognizable voices and laughter coming from outside are very inviting. She
heads out to play while the women put the finishing touches on their dishes. Some family members
have yet to arrive and this is just normal. Kkonaa has always liked the relaxed atmosphere during big
family dinners when dinner is simply served when appetites grow too large from all the delectable
smells.
When the time comes to take a break from playing, Kkonaa sits at the table and waits to be served.
She watches as the Elders are served first but she doesnt mind if this means there will be no tripe
and sardines left for her! She knows that she must not turn down what is served to her at dinner. She
quietly observes as her Naahs then serves the men. She is curious to see how they will react to the
variety of foods being served to them. She likes to watch them smell their plates and exclaim with joy
and gratitude, Oh, this smells wonderful! This is a real feast! When Kkonaa and the rest of the
children are being served, she cant help but take a big bite of her bannock. Then the women serve
themselves and join the rest of the guests at the table. This is Kkonaas favourite part of the meal,
when everyone is eating together, laughing and telling wondrous stories of past and present events.
They are all immersed in their lively conversations and she enjoys taking in these sights and sounds
while she eats her stew. After this, everyone is delighted to be served fresh berry soup.
After dinner, the women clear off the table and clean the dishes. Kkonaa is ushered once again to go
and play with her cousins during this time. And she does. She runs and laughs until the sun goes down.
The children play for hours while the Elders and adults continue to talk and drink mint tea. Kkonaa
eventually feels tired and curls up in an empty spot on the couch near her Naahs. The lively chatter is
soothing to her and as she surrenders to slumber, the voices become dimmer and dimmer. As sleep
overtakes her, she is filled with a sense of joy and comfort. Her belly is full and her heart is too.
