• OBJECTIVES / OBJECTIFS
Use the kinematic relationships among s, v, and a to solve plane curvilinear motion
problems in rectangular coordinate systems & in normal and tangential
coordinate systems.
Determine the kinematic relationships among s, v, and a that govern the relative
motion of particles with respect to translating coordinate frames.

Kinematics was developed first and was primarily studied for use in warfare (Ballistic
Science).
- We were trying to determine the trajectory of arrows and projectiles launched by
devices such as catapults ...
- Later, these same principles were used for guns, missiles, etc.

The position of P at any instant of time t can be specified by its distance s measured from some
convenient reference point O fixed on the line.
• La position de P à tout instant du temps t peut être spécifiée par sa position s mesurée à partir
d'un point de référence convenable O fixé sur la ligne.
At time t + Δt the particle has moved to P ′ and its coordinate becomes s + Δs.
• Au temps t + Δt, la particule s'est déplacée vers P’ et sa coordonnée devient s + Δs.
The change in the position coordinate during the interval Δt is called the displacement Δs of the
particle.
• Le changement de la coordonnée de position pendant l'intervalle Δt est appelé déplacement Δs de
la particule.
The displacement would be negative if the particle moved in the negative s-direction.
• Le déplacement serait négatif si la particule se déplaçait dans la direction s négative.

Thus, the velocity is the time rate of change of the position coordinate s.
The velocity is positive or negative depending on whether the corresponding displacement is positive or

negative.

A particle moves along the x-axis with an initial velocity vx = 50ft/sec at the origin
when t=0. For the first 4 seconds, it has no acceleration, and thereafter it is acted on by
a retarding force which gives it a constant acceleration 𝒂𝒙 = −𝟏𝟎 ft/sec𝟐. (a)
Calculate the velocity and the x- coordinate of the particle for the conditions of t = 8s
and t = 12s and (b) find the maximum positive x-coordinate reached by the particle.
