This study aimed at identifying the effect of the existence of employee

social-structural and psychological empowerment on the achievement of

excellence by the Jordanian organizations participating in the King Abdullah

II Award for Excellence. Six social- structural empowerment conditions were

studied: empowering leadership, empowering culture, empowering operations,

knowledge management, teamwork and technology production. Elements of

psychological empowerment include: competence, meaningfulness, self-

determination, and influence. The study also assessed the impact of the social-

structural and psychological empowerment on the total quality management

and achieving excellence.


The study population included all public sector organizations that

participated in the third round and all the private sector companies that

participated in the fourth round of the competition for the award in the years

2005 and 2006. Their number was 76 organizations. Random sample of three

employees, two of them heads of divisions were selected from each

organization to provide information. The total sample was 228 employees.

The response rate was 93.4% for organizations and 84.6% for employees.

The results showed that the social-structural empowerment conditions

were available in a moderate level in all the organizations (3.60), the highest

levels were in operations, technology, and knowledge. The psychological

empowerment was high in general (4-17). The total quality management was

moderate (3.68) with the highest value for vision, evaluation and measurement

and continuous improvement.

The results also showed that there was a significant effect of social-

structural empowerment on psychological empowerment, total quality

management and excellence.

The study recommended that the social-structural empowerment

conditions be provided in more advanced levels due to their important role in

achieving excellence.
