ORDRE DES INGENIEURS DU QUEBEC MAY 2011 SESSION Open-book examination Calculators : only authorized models Duration: 3 hours 98-Civ-B3 Geotechnical Design Problem 1 (15 pts) A foundation measuring 2 m x 2 m has to be constructed in a medium sand deposit. The groundwater js known to be at 1_m below the ground surface. Given: y= 18 kN/m’, foundation depth (D)) = 1.8 m. Following the N values of a standard penetration test in that soil: Table 1 SPT N values as a function of depth, Depth N 15 2 aeaeae 2 45) 5 6 17 75 21 i a) Estimate an average friction angle, , for the soil (5 pts). b) Estimate the ultimate load (rupture) the foundation can carry (5 pts). ©) Determine the maximum settlement using Peck abacus given in Figure 4 for the given size of the footing. Use the load calculated in question (b) and F.S. = 2 (5 pls). Problem 2 (15 pts) A timber pile 18 m length and 0.3 m diameter is driven in a deposit composed by clay and medium sand. The results of a standard penetration test in medium sand layer (SPT) ate given i table 2. The properties of the various soils are such that illustrated on figure 1 a) Determine the allowable load capacity of the pile. (8 pts) b) Evaluate the number of necessary piles to support a load of 3600 KN. Note that spacing between the piles must be 0,8 m. The width and the length of the group of piles should not exceed 2.2 m and 3 m respectively. (10 pts) ©) Evaluate settlement of the piles group under this load (3600 kN) by neglecting the compressing of the of clay layer (Eyood=10" kPa). (5 pis) b) Determine the total settlement for a load of 600 kN (granular + clay). Use only one layer for the calculation of seitlement in clay. Use the abacus of Peck (figure 4) for the calculation of settlement in sand layer, (10 pts) ©) Evaluate the ultimate load (rupture) the foundation can carry (sand layer only). (5 pts) d) Its possible to build a 0,5 m height fill around this foundation in =20 kN/m?)? Justify. (5 pts) Problem 4 (35 pts) A retaining wall 5 m height must be built to retain a medium sand backfill (figure 3). A permanent load of 20 kPa is also applied at the surface of backfill. @) Determine the diagrams of the active and passive pressures in the long-term (necessary diagram). (10 pts) b) Study the stability of this wall against the long-term overturning (neglect the effect of stress including that of the water on the passive side and in lower part of the wall). (15 pts) ©) Study the stability of this wall against the long-term slip with effect of passive stress. Consider a value of 8=2/36. (10 pts) Figure 3 sand 1B KN?
