The French Riviera

Open to the world and a favorite touristic destination, the French
Riviera is located in the South-East part of France, on the Mediterranean
seaside and bordering Italy. Also known as PACA (which stands for Provence
Alpes Cte dAzur), the region extends over six departments counting four big cities (such
as Avignon, Marseille, Nice and Toulon) and many more famous ones, known for being
delightful historical places (such as Aix-en-Provence, Bandol, Cannes, Saint-Tropez). But
PACA region cannot only be characterized as urbanized as it also provides beautiful natural,

cosmopolite, jeune et estudiantine. Au cur des Alpes Maritimes,

of France.

As the capital of the French Riviera, Nice is a dynamic,

creative, cosmopolitan and student city. Located in the heart
of the Alpes Maritimes county, Nice is surrounded by the
Mediterranean Sea (with over 7 km of beaches) and near the
mountains at the same time (the first ski resorts can be reached
in about an hour). Renowned for the beauty of its neighborhoods
(especially the Old Town), for its exceptional light and its mild climate;
Nice is also a convenient place for sports practice and welcomes important
sports events (Jeux de la francophonie in September 2013, the annual triathlon Ironman France).
But not only. Especially attached to arts and culture, Nice is equally famous for its many private
contemporary art galleries, artists studios, museums (there are about twenty of them), and, last but
not least, its famous Carnival taking place during the winter.

For a student stay exceeding 6 months: The non-temporary long stay student
visa (visa de long sjour non-temporaire) allows you to follow your studies
in a French higher education institution for a minimal duration of six months.
The usual duration of a long-stay visa is one year. This visa is extendable.
Holding a visa of a duration upper than three months with a student mention
exempts you to request a temporary residence permit for the first year of your stay
in France (more details see Registration by OFII below).
For a student stay between 3 to 6 months: The temporary long stay student
visa (visa de long sjour temporaire) allows you to follow courses for a maximal
duration of six months. This kind of temporary stay visa cannot be extended or
turned into a long-stay visa. There is no need of requesting a residence permit
once arrived in France.
For a student stay inferior to 3 months: The short-stay visa (le visa court sjour)
concerns students intending to come to France for a maximal duration of three
months. This visa cannot be extended or turned into a long-stay visa. There is no
need to request a residence permit once youve arrived in France.
student / competitive exam visa (visa tudiant-concours) allows students to
come to France to sit a competitive exam, required to be accepted in a higher
education institution. It lasts for only 90 days. However, if the student passes
the exam and enrolls for good in the institution, the competitive exam visa is
turned into a long-stay visa. Therefore, the student does not need to go back
to his/her country of origin to obtain a different
visa. However, (s)he will have to request a
residence permit.

Student visas should be requested from the nearest French

Once the application file completed, it has to be registered in the nearest French
Consulate or directly in the French Embassy.

OFII registration
Holders of a long-stay student visa, are not
expected to apply for a residence permit in a
prefecture during the first two months of their
stay in France. Nevertheless, it is necessary to
contact the French agency in charge of migration and
welcoming foreign people (in French OFFI, which stands
for Office Franais de lImmigration et de lIntgration) for
registration.
As soon as the long-stay visa is registered, the Consulate provides an application
form for OFII confirmation in the meantime. The student should send it to the relevant
OFII territorial executive department of his/her home address in France within
three months after his/her arrival in France (OFII territorial executive department
addresses are indicated on back covers of the application form and can be find on
the OFII website : http://www.ofii.fr/IMG/pdf/adresses.pdf).
Receiving these documents, the OFII territorial executive department sends a letter
to the address given by the enquirer with an attestation proving the reception of the
previous form and a notification to access registration formalities (and, from case
to case, a notification for a medical check-up if it has not been performed in the
country of origin, or a welcoming visit).
This registration, demonstrated by an OFII label on the passport, is compulsory
as it confirms the visa by providing the residence permit. If the registration is not
completed within three months after his/her arrival in France, the visa holder will be
considered in an illegal situation by the French authorities.
This registration process is subjected to a 58 euros fee that must be paid for by
means of dematerialized stamps or tax stamps. Those stamps can be bought by a
dematerialized way (see the website: www.timbresofii.fr) or paper stamps that
can be found in tobacco stores or tax offices.

of Nice Sophia Antipolis
An introduction to the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis (UNS)
Since its creation in 1965, the UNS has always been a multidisciplinary university with
about 12 main campuses, 1,300 professors, lecturers, researchers and instructors for
more than 25,000 students registered.
The UNS is composed of 7 faculties, 4 institutes and 2 schools (including Polytech Nice
Sophia). The University of Nice Sophia Antipolis offers a variety of high level courses,
leading to a wide range of Masters Degrees, meeting the expectations of our students
and suiting the constantly evolving labor market.
Research is among the leading priorities. It is fully developed in research units,
recognized on the international scene, thus contributing to the standing of the UNS.
Thanks to its privileged localization, the UNS is therefore unquestionably appealing and
this fact is illustrated by a high percentage of foreign students (18.5%).

In charge of the administrative management and focusing

on international students and exchange programs, the
international relations Offices (in French, BRI, standing
for Bureau des relations internationales) are located on
every campus. BRI, under the supervision of the Vice-Dean
or the Directors assistant representative of international relations,
supervise exchange programs for students and deal with UNS faculties
or institutes international activities. Therefore, BRI is a meeting point for
international students enjoying an exchange program in the UNS.

Welcome and Mobility Service

Recently established within UNS, the Welcome and Mobility
Service (in French SAM, standing for Service Accueil Mobilit)
offers optional, specific and charged assistance, low cost (for both
individual and group), towards international students to help them
succeeding the important three steps of their stay in Nice:

Preparation of your stay by

- An adapted and personalized offer for your accommodation request.
- Assistance through procedures to obtain residence permit: assembling and submitting
the application file, useful information on insurance, medical check-up, etc
- Opening a bank account.
- A personalized welcome for your arrival, including:

Transportation from the airport to your accommodation,

A prepaid phone card,

 kit providing information on Nice daily life: transports, a map of the city and
the region, subscriptions, etc.

Assistance during your stay

- French as a Foreign Language courses: evening courses for every level and according
to specific topics.
- Available people ready to answer all of your questions (on accommodation, extension
of residence permit, etc.).
- Inter-cultural calendar in partnership with UNS services, ESN association and many
others organizing meetings in a friendly atmosphere, cultural activities to favor your
leisure time by giving you the opportunity to discover French Riviera at discounted

UNS facilitates disabled students integration for university education as well as for other
activities related to student life. A Reception Committee for Disabled Students (in French CAEH,
standing for Cellule dAccueil des Etudiants Handicaps) has been created to assist, guide,
advise and find appropriate and specific solutions. CAEH collaborates with SUMPPS (standing
for Service Universitaire de Mdecine Prventive et de Promotion de la Sant, which is the
University Preventive Medicine and Health Promotion Service).
More especially, CAEHs goal is to provide:
- Adjustments for studies (note-taking, tutoring, or other ways to assist disabled students).
- Adjustments for examination (increased time, secretariat, special needs equipments, individual
rooms).

The University Librairies

There is one library settled on every campus of the
University of Nice Sophia Antipolis. UNS library staff is
always willing to advise, give directions, guide students
and answer their questions. Databases searching training
and online tutorials are also offered. During the academic
year, libraries are open from Monday to Friday, and on Saturday
morning.
Saint Jean dAnglys library is open seven days a week - Monday to
Friday: 8am-8pm - Saturday and Sunday: 10am-8pm.

How to improve your language skills

UNS assists international students in their learning and
improvement of French language by SCL (in French
Service Commun en Langues), formerly known as
Institut Universitaire des Langues(IUL), meaning
University Institute of Languages).

SCL offers a wide variety of possibilities for language tutoring, principally through:
Three Language Centers (in French CRL, which stands for Centres de Ressources
en Langues) are located on the following campuses: Carlone, Saint-Jean dAngly and
Trotabas. They give all of the UNS students a chance to enhance their language skills,
in French or other languages. After a free registration, students can access more than
2,500 documentary resources, for all levels. In those three CRL, everything facilitates the
process of learning languages.
A staff composed of monitors is also available onsite to advise students, in group or
individually, in training for certification preparation...

The International Summer School of Nice is a university center for language
learning located on campus Carlone. Every summer (celebrating 30 years of existence
in 2013), UNS UIEN (standing for Universit Internationale dEt de Nice) welcomes
international students, from all over the world, willing to improve their French language
skills, whether they be beginners or advanced students.
UIEN offers two sessions for French as a Foreign Language courses (in French FLE,
standing for Franais Langue Etrangre), one in July and the other one in August, both
lasting three weeks. The programme includes a three hour course in the morning, a two
hour workshop in the beginning of the afternoon, and a lot of cultural and leisure activities
for the rest of the time.

Sports activities
SUAPS (which stands for Service Universitaire des
Activits Physiques et Sportives and means University
Service for Sports and Physical Activities) offers students
the possibility to practice more than 60 activities (team
sports, combat sports, rackets sports, fitness activities,
dances, water sports, field sports, sports in nature). In certain
UFR, sports bonus, additional teaching or optional educational
units can be added to your academic transcript. You may find

The cheapest means of accommodation in Nice is provided
by CROUS college rooms (in French Comit Rgional des Oeuvres
Universitaires et Scolaires, which means Regional Committee for
University and Education Work). Students can access this service by filling an
International Student Accommodation Form (in French LEI, which stands for
dossier Logement Etudiant International) between January 15th and April 30
for the following academic year, and send it to the CROUS service with all of the
required and relevant documents on May 31st at the latest:

The different types of accommodation are all characterized by being
furnished and benefiting from internet connection. The average rent is:

Individual or group rentals

Excluding college rooms and university residences, you may
find accommodation opportunities looking directly at the private
market (individual persons or real estate agencies): there are
furnished or unfurnished ones, and often equipped with a kitchenette.
Extra taxes are likely to be required in addition to the rent (phone, insurance,
heating, electricity and water supply, etc.). Taxes cost is generally notified in the
accommodation information descriptive.
In French colocation (flat-sharing) is when people share a flat. It involves at least
two people, but it can be more: they are the lease agreement participants (les

Open to students registered in a higher education institution, there is a university
canteen (in French RU, which stands for Restaurant Universitaire) located on every
campus, alongside with a cafeteria and/or a sandwich shop.
University canteens offer a wide range of full meals, salads, hot and cold sandwiches,
special dishes (grill, pizzas, buffet), set menu for a very affordable cost.
On an indicative basis, in 2012-2013 the meal ticket cost 3.10 for a full meal composed
of a starter, a main dish and a dessert.

ESN Nice The student association

for international exchanges
Erasmus Student Network ( ESN) is an international network. It was created in 1990 and it aims
to support and develop student exchanges through the local sections that compose it.
ESN International is present in 36 countries and has over 12,000 active members in more than
428 local sections offering services to 160,000 students. It liaises with the different sections
and represents them at local, national and international levels in order to promote the interests
of international students.

t fond en 1990 et a pour but de proposer des services divers aux tudiants en mobilit
ltranger, au travers des associations locales qui le composent.

In a nutshell, ESN aims to:

- welcome all international students,
- improve the social and practical integration of international students,
- give information to local students on how to study abroad.

At a national level, ESN France was created in 2008 in Brussels.

There were 6 French sections at the time, there are now 25. Today, ESN
France represents more than 15,000 international students in the country.
Of course, ESN France is part of ESN International and shares the same
goals: to coordinate the actions of ESN sections in France and liaise with
them. ESN France is growing steadily, joined by 3 to 4 new sections per
year.

At the local level, ESN Nice was created on 28 September 2010

by a group of Nice University students on their return from their studies
abroad. ESN Nice has a committee of 30 volunteers including French or
international students and young professionals.
In most cases, active members are former ERASMUS students who want
to share and continue their cultural experience with international students
at Nice University (Universit de Nice-Sophia Antipolis, UNS). They created
a local section in Nice, which joined ESN France in February 2011.
Our association attracts every year about 2,000 international
and French students who are the main people involved
in all our activities. The target audience includes
all international students from UNS and French
students wishing to study abroad or to discover
other cultures.

Parrainage
Le parrainage consiste prsenter un tudiant en mobilit un tudiant franais. Ce
parrain (marraine) sera prt aider ltudiant international surmonter toutes sortes
de difficults du quotidien. Cest un vnement gratuit et amical, qui ne comporte
aucune obligation.

The parrainage, or buddy system, aims to pair each

international student with a French student. The parrain
or marraine (literally the godfather or godmother)
will help the international student (le filleul or la filleule)
to overcome all kinds of difficulties in everyday life. This is
totally free; there is no obligation whatsoever.

CINE FORUM is organized every Monday night : students are welcome at the Pathe
Massena Theater to see a movie in French or in its original version with French subtitles.
Tickets cost 5. We like to talk about the movie in a bar afterwards.

SALSA AND BACHATA CLASSES are provided in a warm and friendly atmosphere at
a very reasonable price every Wednesday night.

8 pm : Bachata Style

9 pm : Salsa - Advanced

KRAV-MAGA sessions Krav-Maga is taught every Saturday morning by a qualified

teacher (over 15 years of experience). Lessons are given outdoors, at a location with a
sea view.
Krav-Maga is an easily learned self-defense system inspired by several martial arts in
which technique is more important than physical strength.
The first lesson is FREE, and the following ones are only 5 each !

ESN Nice regularly organizes trips across France to
