Bon vs. Bien
People often confuse bon and bien because they both have positive meanings and can be
adjectives, adverbs, or nouns.
1. The adjective bon- Bon is most commonly an adjective. It modifies a noun. For example:

Il est bon tudiant. "He is a good student."


J'ai pass une bonne soire. "I had a nice evening."
C'est bon! "It's good!" (When speaking about food)
Il est bon aux checs. "He is good at playing chess." (speaking of ability)

2. Adverb of manner: bien- You will most often find bien as an adverb modifying a verb. It
means "well" and tells the manner in which someone does something. For example:

Il se porte bien. "He is in good health."
Il joue bien aux checs. "He plays well at chess."

You may also use bien as an adjective.
