Introduction
Good luck !
Nous remercions toutes les personnes qui nous ont apport leur aide lors de la
conception de cet ouvrage.

Stephen William Hawking
A British theoretical physicist, he was born on January 8, 1942 in Oxford,
England. When he was eight, his family moved to St. Albans. In 1959 he
started studying at University College, Oxford, from which he graduated
with rst class honours in physics in 1962. He then moved to Cambridge
to take up research in general relativity and cosmology. After completing
his doctorate in 1966, Hawking was awarded a fellowship at Gonville
and Caius College, Cambridge. He became Professor of Gravitational
Physics in 1977. Two years later, he was appointed Lucasian Professor of
Mathematics. He retired on October 1, 2009, yet he will go on working at
the University of Cambridge as Director of Research at DAMTP. Hawking
has a neuro muscular dystrophy and is almost completely paralysed.
Stephen Hawking has worked on the basic laws which govern the universe. His
work has inuenced the development of the Big Bang and black hole theories.

Albert Einstein
A theoretical physicist, he was born at Ulm, in Wrttemberg, Germany, on
March 14th, 1879 and died on April 18th, 1955 in Princeton, USA. Right
after his birth, the family moved to Munich, then to Pavia, Italy, and Aarau,
Switzerland. He entered the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich in
1896 to become a mathematics and physics teacher. In 1900 he received
his teaching diploma and started work on his doctoral thesis. A year later
he acquired Swiss citizenship and accepted a position as a teacher. In 1905
he published the Special Theory of Relativity and the following year he
obtained his PhD from the University of Zurich.
In 1909 he became Professor Extraordinary at Zurich, in 1911 Professor
of Theoretical Physics in Prague, and in 1912 he got the same position in
Zurich. In 1914 he was appointed Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Physical
Institute and Professor in the University of Berlin. That year he became a
German citizen and remained in Berlin until 1933, when he was led to
renounce his citizenship for political reasons his family was Jewish.
After emigrating to America, he was appointed Professor of Theoretical
Physics at Princeton. He retired in 1945, only ve years after he became a
U.S. citizen.
Einstein is regarded as the greatest scientist of the 20th century. Apart from
the theory of relativity, he also contributed to the development of quantum
mechanics, statistical mechanics and cosmology. In 1921 he was awarded
the Nobel Prize for Physics.

Crick. In 1956, Watson became a junior member of Harvard University's
Biological Laboratories, which he would leave in 1976. In 1962 Watson,
Crick, and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or
Medicine. From 1968 he served as director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
(CSHL) on Long Island, New York. Between 1988 and 1992, Watson was
associated with the National Institutes of Health, helping to establish the
Human Genome Project. In 1994, he became the president of CSHL for ten
years, and then served as its chancellor until 2007, when he resigned.
He is known as one of the two co-discoverers with Francis Crick of
the structure of DNA in 1953.

A brief history of the National
Health Service in the U.K.
The National Health Service (NHS) oers health services to all permanent
residents of the United Kingdom and is funded through general taxation.
Each of the four countries that constitute the U.K. has a specic NHS, yet
they cooperate with each other.
At rst the majority of doctors did not believe in the NHS as they feared
they would lose patients and money as well as their professional freedom,
but almost all eventually joined it. Its popularity was such that the
governments annual budget was never sucient to pay for all medical
treatments, notably glasses and dental surgery.
Some key dates :
1948 : NHS created under Clement Atlees Labour government. Thereafter
free medical treatment is oered to everyone.
1951 : Charge introduced for some dental surgery and prescriptions for
medicine, except for the young, the elderly, low income or disabled
patients.
2009 : NHS Constitution adopted by the Department of Health. It states
its organization, duties and objectives : "A range of organizations
provide NHS services direct to patients, including hospital trusts,
mental health trusts, ambulance trusts, GP practices, dental
practices, community pharmacies, optical practices, and NHS
Direct." Emergency services are provided by public hospitals only.
Today the NHS oers services free of charge. In 2009 the NHS in England
spent around 100 billion a year nearly 2,000 per person on average.
On the other hand, hospitals employ salaried employees under nationally
agreed contracts. General practitioners, who work in independent practices,
oer primary care and are paid a nationally determined fee.
Private health services are run in parallel to the services regulated by the
NHS. They are mainly paid by private insurance. Patients may also go
abroad to get special treatments that will be paid by the NHS.

A brief history of the health care
system in the USA
The American health care system is undergoing a major reform under
the Obama Administration in 2009-2010. To understand why it is being
so much criticized, we will rst consider the system as it is today, before
presenting the proposed reform, which still has to be voted by Congress.
The Americans do not benet from a universal health care system although
the state does fund some specic health care organisms that cover part
of the population : the elderly, the poor, veterans and the military. Yet
President Obama declared in September 2009 : "In just a two-year period,
one in every three Americans goes without health care coverage at some
point. And every day, 14,000 Americans lose their coverage."
A little more than half the population receives health insurance through
their employers, yet this number is on the decline whereas the medical
costs have increased sharply. Others cannot count on their jobs or are self-
employed and in that case, it is very dicult for them to aord individual
coverage because it is almost three times as much as the coverage from an
employer, hence the importance in the choice of a job. Moreover insurance
companies refuse to cover many citizens because of previous illnesses or
specic risks.
Some key dates :
1787 : The U.S. Constitution states that "The Congress shall have Power to
lay and collect Taxes, [] and provide for the [] general Welfare
of the United States" (Article 1 Section 8).
1935 : Social Security Act (part of Roosevelts New Deal) oers old-age
assistance, aid to dependent children and to mothers to be.
1953 : Creation of the Department of Health Education and Welfare
(HEW), replaced by The Department of Health and Human Ser-

A brief history of ecology
in the USA
In 1998, Vice-President Al Gore symbolically signed the Kyoto Protocol,
but it was never ratied. However over the years, some measures have
been taken to preserve the environment, notably in certain states such as
California. The new president has however announced his desire to have
the nation participate in world environmental eorts.
In October 2009, Barack Obama indeed initiated the GreenGov Chal-
lenge as part of the Department of the Interior, which is the principal
conservation agency in the US. In doing so, the president intends to make
the federal government an example of sustainability by building a clean
energy program that will help the U.S. meet the 2020 greenhouse gas
emissions reduction target.
In 2009, a new Energy Frontier was launched by the Department of
the Interior to prot from the renewable-energy potential of Americas
public lands, which oer solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, bioenergy, and
hydropower, whereas wind energy, ocean-wave energy and ocean-current
energy will be produced o-shore.
In December 2009, President Obama went to Copenhagen Summit on
Climate Change to show his desire to participate in the world eort to
preserve the earth. However the outcome was not as constructive as the
Kyoto Protocol, the only positive point being the participation of the
USA, China and India, which are among the most polluting countries in
the world.

A brief history of space in Britain
The British National Space Centre (BNSC) was created in 1985 as part of
the Ministry of Science and Innovation at the Department for Business,
Innovation and Skills (BIS). Its aims are to coordinate the UK civil space
activity, to support academic research, to nurture the UK space industry,
and to increase the understanding of space and its practical benets.
Today space programmes contribute about 5.8 billion to the UK
economy, employing more than 18,000 skilled workers. They are shaped
by the "UK Civil Space Strategy 2008-2012 and Beyond" whose objec-
tives are to increase and promote the role of Britain in the global market in
space and in the technological innovations that follow.
The Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire is a
joint venture between one of BNSCs key partners, STFC (Science &
Technology Facilities Council), the Atomic Energy Authority and inter-
national property developer Goodman. Since July 2009, it has housed
scientists of the European Space Agency (ESA), which makes the campus
a new hub of the UKs space programme.

A brief history of space
in the USA
In 1958 President Eisenhower created the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA), whose mission is to pioneer the future in space
exploration, scientic discovery and aeronautics research. In the early
1960s, President Kennedy then launched the New Frontier : space, hence
the mission to the Moon, which was completed on July 20, 1969, when
Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the Moon.
Meanwhile NASA has developed research in space technology and its
applications on the Earth, notably weather and communications satellites.
Its space shuttle, which has had 120 successful ights, was rst launched
in 1981. Since 2000, NASA has contributed to the creation of the Inter-
national Space Station (ISS) along with 15 other countries.
Furthermore it has developed exploration rovers such as Spirit and
Opportunity, which have been studying Mars since 2004, while Cassini
has been in orbit around Saturn and the Hubble Space Telescope has been
exploring the cosmos. The data sent by its satellites helps understand the
evolution of the Earth, especially in terms of climate and oceans.
At the same time, its aeronautics team has played an important part in
improving aircraft travel, making it safer and more environmentally-
friendly. In the years to come, NASAs objective is to send humans not
only beyond Earth's orbit, but where no one has ever been. Yet through
its Global Climate Change Education initiative, it is also concentrating
on Americans understanding of space and its use in curbing the Earths
climate change.
Last but not least, the U.S. Department of State includes the Oce of
Space and Advanced Technology (OES/SAT), which deals with space
policy issues at the international level, such as minimizing the generation
of orbital debris or encouraging foreign countries to accept the U.S. Glo-

A brief history
of computer science
Contrary to what many people think, computer science does not deal with
information technology or video games, but should rather be described
as the study of the mathematical foundations of information and compu-
tation, and of techniques that permit to implement and apply them in
computer systems.
Modern computer science was developed in the 20th century, although
mathematical theories and the invention of certain devices had already
set the basis of computer engineering. Before the 1920s, human clerks,
especially women with a degree in calculus, were called "computers"
because they performed computations. After that decade, a "computing
machine" performed part of the work of a human computer.
Alan Turing (1912-1954), an English mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst,
and computer scientist, is considered the father of computer science. In
1936, he described the Turing Machine, which later inspired the modern
computer. He went on designing software in the 1940s and his Turing Test
(1950) was extremely important in the debate over articial intelligence.
Some key dates (among many others) :
1924 : IBM is founded.
1936 : The Turing Machine is described.
1937 : George Stibitz creates his Model K, the rst device using binary
form to calculate.
1941 : Turing, Newman and Flowers complete Colossus, the rst all-
electronic calculating machine.
1947 : Hewlett Packard is founded.
1950 : Turings ACE computer is completed. Several other computers are
developed by other engineers.
1953 : IBM 650 is the rst computer to be mass-produced.
1958 : The modem is invented at Bell Labs.
1959 : The second generation of computers starts with transistors instead
of tubes.
1962 : The worlds most powerful computer, the Atlas, is launched in
Britain.

A brief history of genetics
William Bateson (1861-1926), who coined the term "genetics" in 1905
and played a major role in the development of early genetics in Britain,
founded the John Innes Centre in Norwich, UK, in 1909. The Centre has
contributed to the modern sciences of crop genetics, bacterial genetics and
Arabidopsis research.
Some key dates :
1866 : Mendels "Experiments in Plant Hybridisation" published,
establishing the basic laws of inheritance.
1869 : Miescher extracts what comes to be known as DNA from the nuclei
of white blood cells.
1902 : Boveri and Sutton propose that chromosomes bear hereditary factors.
1904 : Bateson describes gene linkage and shows that several genes may be
required for a specic characteristic.
1909 : Johannsen determines basic genetic terms.
1913 : Sturtevant creates the rst gene map.
1927 : Muller shows X-rays can produce mutations.
1934 : Bernal uses X-ray crystallography to illuminate the structure of
proteins.
1941 : Beadle and Tatum demonstrate how genes direct the synthesis of
enzymes that control metabolic processes.
1943 : Delbrck and Luria start studying bacterial genetics.
1957 : Crick sets out the agenda for molecular biology.
1961 : Nirenberg cracks the genetic code.
1977 : Gilbert and Sanger devise techniques for sequencing DNA.
1986 : The eort to sequence the human genome is launched.
1990s : The genome of a growing number of organisms is sequenced.
2000 : The human genome is sequenced and assembled.
2000s : Many discoveries related to cancer genomics.
