Asking/Giving Time
Note: to calculate time from military time, deduct 12 from the number
of hours if it is over 12. If the number of hours is less than 12, it is
morning. If the number of hours is over 12, it is afternoon or evening.

L’heure conversationnelle (12 hour clock)
When not referring to a schedule, the French use conversational time. When
using conversational time, you must specify the time of day (“du matin”
before noon, “de l’après-midi” from noon to 5:59PM, or “du soir” from
6:00PM to midnight)
• CONVERSATIONAL TIME:
• Il est une heure du matin/de l’après-midi.
• Il est deux heures du matin/de l’après-midi.
• Il est six heures du matin/du soir.
• Il est onze heures du matin/du soir.
- If the minutes are UNDER 30, say the number of hours, then
“heure(s),” then the number of minutes.

• En avance (early) – Je suis en avance (I am early)
• En retard (late) – Je suis en retard (I am late)
• Pile (on the dot) – Il est midi pile
• Presque (almost) – Il est presque cinq heures.
• Tard (late in the day) – Il est tard (it is late)
• Tôt (early in the day) – Il est tôt (it is early)
• Vers (at approximately) – On étudie à la bibliothèque vers
quatre heures.
