Site elevation was taken from Google Earth:

Site A: 22 m
Site B: 74 m

7. Determining the frequency band required

This figure gives us an idea of which frequency may be used for a path
length of 31km. The 10GHz cannot be used because its designated as DTS
(Data Termination Service) a microwave link that connects path termination
equipment to another. Therefore, we use the 13GHz as our operating
frequency.

8. DETERMINING THE CHANNEL PLANS AVAILABLE

For The 13Ghz band with a channel capacity of 8 x E1, the following
channel plans are available:
Frequency Band: 13GHz
Frequency Range: 12.75GHz to 13.25GHz
Low Band Range: 12.75GHz to 12.98GHz
High Band Range: 13.01GHzto 13.25GHz
Duplex Spacing: 266MHz
Channel Bandwidth for 8 x E1: 14MHz

DESIGN PARAMETERS AND CALCULATIONS

I. Equipment Specification
1. Microwave Radio Output
The ODU that will be used in this project is SAGEM LINK F. This
is weatherproof sealed assemble designed to be attached easily to the
antenna without affecting antenna alignment. The ODU is multi-rate from 2
to 16 E1. Transmitter output is taken from the data sheet of the microwave
equipment. It is the amount of microwave carrier output in dBm. Our
microwave radio equipment has a power output of 26 dBm.
2. Tower
The tower used is a self supporting tower with a pyramid base. It
is a SSMW model manufactured by ROHN, with 89 m and 27 m height for Site
A and B respectively.
3. Coaxial Cable Loss
The microwave equipment used in the design features the used
of up to 300 meters length of coaxial cable connector from ODU to IDU.

4. Transmitter/Receiver Antenna Gain

The antenna manufactured by SAGEM with model name SAGEM
Link F will be used in the design. The antenna gain is taken from the data
sheet usually expressed dB. It is the amount of increase that signal density
undergoes when focused into a pencil beam. The antenna gain with 13Ghz
operating frequency and 1.80 meter dish diameter is 45 dBi.

5. Antenna Misalignment
Antenna Misalignment is a human error factor. This loss comes
from the condition of the antenna when being installed especially for long
haul microwave links; where in a sight misalignment of the antenna may
result in several meter displacements. The value of this loss is assumed to
never go above 0.25 dB per antenna or 0.5 dB for the link.We use 0.5 dB loss
in the link budget for the misalignment of the antenna during installation.

6. Minimum Receiver Threshold

Republic of the Philippines
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

The receiver manufactured by SAGEM with model LINK F will be used

for the design. The Receiver Threshold is taken from the Microwave Radio
Equipment Data Sheet. This is the minimum amount of Microwave carrier
Input Power, usually expressed in dBm. The Minimum Receiver Threshold of
our Radio Equipment is at -87 dBm

II. PATH LOSS

1. Free Space Loss (FSL)

It is the amount of loss, expressed in dB, on how much the signal density
reduces as it travels in free space. It is given by the formula:
FSL=92.45 + 20 log F(GHz) + 20 log D(km)
Solving for both Low Band and High Band Frequency
For Low Band Transmit Frequency at 12.848 GHz
FSL=92.45 + 20 log (12.848) (GHz) + 20 log (35) (km)
FSL (low) = 145.5080714 dB

For High Band Transmit Frequency at 13.108 GHz

FSL (high) = 145.6820895 dB

2. Power Input to Receiver (RSL)

RSL is the amount of Input Signal into the receiver the receiver from
the waveguide. Mathematically, it is the sum of all losses and gains on the
transmitter output.
RSL = Microwave Output Power Losses + Gain
Solving for both Low Band and High Band Frequency
Microwave Output Power = 26 dBm

RSL (high) = 26 dBm 155.9439005dB + 90 dBi

3. Diffraction Loss
In determining if there is a need to compute for diffraction losses,
find out if any point along the path comes closer than 150% 1 st Fresnel
Zone. It would be clear on the table on page 13 that it clears out the

150% 1st Fresnel Zone since the sum of the Obstruction Height and the
Clearance 150% F1 is never greater than the line of sight, and therefore
there is no need to compute for the diffraction loss.

4. Clutter Loss
Clutter loss is the attenuation due to the trees as well as the
buildings in front of the antenna. They should be within the near field
of the antenna. Since we put an allowance on the tower height for
trees and buildings as an obstruction, we did not have any diffraction
on our link. It shows that the diffraction is not a factor. Therefore
Cluster Loss can be omitted.

5. THERMAL FADE MARGIN FOR LOW BAND and HIGH BAND TRANSMIT
FREQUENCY

The minimum receiver threshold is -87 dBm taken from radio

specification. The thermal fade margin is computed from the formula:

Thermal Fade Margin (Low)

= Received Signal Strength (Low) Minimum Received
Threshold (Low)
= (-39.7698824dB) (-87 dBm)
=47.2301176 dB

Design Summary

Microwave transmission is the transmission of information or energy

by electromagnetic waves whose wavelengths are measured in small
numbers of centimeter; these are called microwaves. This part of the radio
spectrum ranges across frequencies of roughly 1.0 GHz to 30 GHz. These
correspond to wavelengths from 30 centimeters down to 0.1 cm.

This study aims to design a reliable Point-to-Point Microwave

Communications System connecting the head-end to head-end of a cable
television; design a microwave link system having a reliability of 99.999%; to
know and understand how radio equipment, towers, waveguide and
antennas involve in a communication system in terms of their performance,
efficiency and function, and; and be able to come up with a project that will
help us grasp the idea of microwave design more comprehensively.

The design implements point-to-point communication between (Site A)

28' 52.23" E elevation of 22m to (Site B) Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro with

Latitude 12 44' 0.82" N; Longitude 121 27' 39.78" E; elevation of 74m, with
a total path length of 35 km.

The minimum antenna height at one end of the link Site A should be
around 88.5626 meters on each ends elevation above sea level. And the
minimum antenna height at Site B should be around 26.5626 meter tower.

The ODU that will be used in this project is SAGEM LINK F. This is
weatherproof sealed assemble designed to be attached easily without
affecting antenna alignment. The ODU is multi-rate from 2 to 16 E1.
Transmitter output is taken from the data sheet of the microwave equipment.
It is the amount of microwave carrier output in dBm. Our microwave radio
equipment has a power output of 26 dBm. It is the amount of increase that
signal density undergoes when focused into a pencil beam. The antenna gain
with 13GHz operating frequency and 1.80 meter dish diameter is 45 dBi. The
tower used is a self-supporting tower with a pyramid base. It is a SSMW
model manufactured by ROHN, with 89m and 27m height for Site A and B
respectively. The microwave equipment used in the design features the used
of up to 300 meters length of coaxial cable connector from ODU to IDU.
