Wide plank oak floors that are curved?

JEANNE BOTES
Jeanne is our new-ish decor editor
(she joined the team in January)
and we have her to thank for the
wonderful finds on our Get-the-
look pages. Here’s what’s on her
winter watch list.
My city to watch this year is…
Cape Town, because it’s the World
Design Capital for 2014, and Milan,
where each year’s design trends
are seen first. My favourite trend
is… copper, rock and crystals. I like
winter because… I don’t like the
cold so I would have to say I like it
because I can sit next to a warm fire.
What is your decor philosophy?
Buy what you love, don’t overthink
and don’t copy. Your favourite
country escape? Arniston. I love
the Overberg.
@jeanbotes
GREG COX
Greg shot all three South African
country homes in Stanford,
Hopefield and De Kelders featured
in this issue.
My city to watch this year is…
Cape Town. My favourite trend
is… bringing the outside inside by
using luscious green plants. I like
winter because… you get to layer,
keep cosy and eat delicious comfort
food. What is your favourite decor
trick? Using several lamps to create
a mood in a room rather than bright
ceiling lights. Where would you like
to visit this year? South America.
Your favourite country escape?
Anywhere on the West Coast.
MATTHIEU SALVAING
Matthieu photographed the Paris
apartment of François Dorget, a
lifelong traveller and collector, on
page 136.
My city to watch this year is…
Marseille. It was the European
Capital of Culture in 2013 and is
home to MuCEM, the first museum
dedicated to Mediterranean culture.
I like winter because… I like
to hear the raindrops against my
window while I’m in bed. What is
your favourite decor trick? I love
the mixture of luxurious elements
and very rough materials. Where
would you like to visit this year?
I would love to go to Japan.

In praise of
COINCIDENCE
It was at my nephew’s wedding that I was yet
again struck by the thought that much of our
lives is ruled by coincidence.
The backstory is this: After finishing his studies
at Stellenbosch University Mark chose the open
seas instead of the confines of an office. In the
course of the three years he had spent crewing
for luxury yachts in the Mediterranean, he fell in
love with, and proposed to, a petite French girl.
Now this is where it gets interesting. His
bride happens to be the granddaughter of
Jean DeMachy who founded ELLE Decoration
France in 1985. So there I was, on 8 March, With Claude

Broth:
1 sachet Tom Yum paste
1 tbsp (15ml) fish sauce

Juice of 2 limes

Fish:

2 spring onions, sliced
Salt and pepper
Jasmine rice, steamed, or rice noodles for serving
Preheat the oven to 200°C. Place all the broth ingredients except the
mushrooms in a saucepan and simmer gently for 5-10 minutes. Make
a few shallow cuts in the fish and place on a roasting tray. Scatter with
ginger and spring onions and season. Roast for 15 minutes or until the
fish is cooked (this will depend on its size). A knife will easily slide into
the thickest part once it is done. Add the mushrooms to the broth and
simmer for 1 minute. Place fish in a wide, shallow bowl or platter and
spoon the broth over it. Serve with rice.

The name Dargle Valley sounds like a setting straight out
of The Lord of the Rings and it is there, in the Midlands,
that Andrew Early turns salvaged tree trunks into
wooden bowls that are nothing short of magical. Each
piece starts as a piece of wet wood which is turned on
the lathes in the workshop and left to dry for up to five
years before turning them a second time. Only then
will it be ready to be sanded and finished. It’s 20 years
since Andrew first tried woodturning as a student, and

range that includes blankets, tablecloths, throws, towels and tea

of Provencal linen and Basotho traditional blankets. Apparently,
says Tessa Holding, the stripes in the Basotho blankets came
about because of a mistake: 'These blankets were initially woven
in England and the stripes were the result of a misunderstanding.
However, it became very popular among communities in South
Africa and was incorporated into the design from then on.'

Screenprinted textiles, Midlands
Sally Scott and Christiane Voith are the duo behind Caversham
Textiles. If the name sounds familiar it's because they work from
the same old Wesleyan Methodist chapel in Balgowan, in the
Natal Midlands, as Caversham Press, which is run by Sally’s
dad Malcolm. Their textiles are screenprinted by hand and the
images are either inspired by the press's prints or have been
specially created by the likes of Vusi Zwane, the current
artist-in-residence.

Hand-decorated plates, Durban
Terry grew up in Zimbabwe, during the Bush War, and her childhood memories
are permeated with ‘a sense of optimism no matter what. Even war could not
stop our family from going on camping holidays’, albeit with an armed escort.
Today, this optimism infuses the old plates she decorates with vintage clothes
patterns and illustrations of deer, rabbits, bears, as well as springbok and
Cape sunbirds. The end result is a juxtaposition of, she says, ‘innocence with
something dark lurking at the edge’.

Despite what people think, Sarah did not grow
up messing around in her dad’s studio. (Dad is

obtaining a degree in fine art sculpture that
Sarah ‘found clay’, and says, ‘I guess it’s in the

Although her background in sculpture influences
her work, she enjoys the fact that pots, especially

knowing that someone will get pleasure from her

WIN PRIZES TO THE VALUE
OF R200 000 WITH EFFICIENT
LIGHTING DESIGN
Few design elements are as versatile and wield as much power to
define and transfigure a space as light. Photographer John
Sexton put it simply: ‘It is light that reveals, light that obscures,
light that communicates’ – true words for any interior designer or
homeowner who would dare to explore this fascinating medium.
The challenge, of course, remains how to strike the perfect
balance between functionality and creative expression.
IN SEARCH OF
BRILLIANCE
This year, the Eskom Energy Efficient Lighting Design Competition will again showcase
local lighting designs that exude individuality and challenge convention. The search is
on for talented South Africans with flair and design savvy; the artistic intuition that
sparks new trends and who, above all, has the ability to transform pure science into
pure art.
Designers, DIY-loving homeowners and creatives are invited to design a luminaire (light
fitting) that makes use of energy-efficient technology, such as compact fluorescent (or
energy-saving) light bulbs, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), fibre optics or any other
energy-efficient lighting system or product suitable for residential use.

– and safely – serves venison as well as springbok,

their garden, and the Althams are planning to extent the
garden to 700 square metres. They take care not to use

L
Sunday; nothing is open, the streets are empty and
everything is peaceful,’ says Neil Stemmet, the
owner of this beachside home with a difference. Just
because a house is at the sea doesn’t mean it needs
to look like a beach house, yet the luxury of coastal
solitude and stillness runs like a thread through Neil’s home. He
pays homage to authenticity, to the return to real quality, intuitive
design; all the while celebrating uniquely crafted items. In a
noisy world of consumerism, of acceleration and information
bombardment, his home stands as a beacon of Zen, where he
continuously finds fresh inspiration, where he allows himself to
be free of the dictation of trends; where he can be real.
For a home that looks so meticulously and elegantly put
together, it is refreshing to know that every item has been carefully
chosen over time, and placed – and re-placed – before finding a
spot that is just right. In the truest sense, Neil’s home is a cabinet
of curiosities filled with beautiful items that he has collected over
time and across continents. Even more interesting is the
inventive way in which he has grouped and displayed them;
Rosenthal dinnerware sit side by side with African artefacts.
There are glassware from Prague, bright yellow National
Geographic magazines, clusters of coral and bowls of dominoes. It
is this that brings their true value to the fore, in the stories they
carry and secret meaning they hold for their owner. Q

itting on a long, shaded stoep, sipping tea and watching the
activities of Hopefield in the distance, Laurent Bayard
explains how it was a photograph of the very same stoep that
had prompted him to head into the country and buy Karl
Bremmer’s family home. Couvaloup, as it is named today,
translates to ‘the wolf’s den’, and is the name of the French
countryside village where Laurent spent his childhood holidays.
A collector par excellence, Laurent started treasure hunting and
accumulating from the young age of 17. He has continued to do so his
entire life, wandering markets in France, England, India and Africa He
confesses to having an obsession with beautiful objects, and this is
profoundly obvious in his home, the place where this traveller has fostered
a sense of belonging. Together with his six dogs and his staff, Leola and
Assam, Laurent now runs the home, set in a 1.5-hectare estate, as a
guesthouse. Each of the seven bedrooms is decorated in a different style,
ranging from retro through to classical and tribal.
It was no easy task getting this remarkable home that dates back to
1852 to look this way. Laurent courageously set out with a derelict
canvas; he carefully planned, imagined and gathered and, after a very
long, somewhat painful year of renovating, fashioned a country home
like no other. Here the old-world glamour of Paris meets the verve of
Ibiza; the gentle pace of the country sits in harmony with the joyous
colours of India and patterns of Africa. The strong cultural overtones of
the guesthouse are evidence of a man well-travelled and well-read. You
should pay him a visit. Q
