This song was written in 1943 for the smash hit film musical "Meet Me in St Louis". In the film it is sung by the 22 year old
Judy Garland to Margaret O'Brien. At the time audiences wept (and they still do today) for it is one of the saddest, most
touching and profoundly vulnerable performances on record.

During the War purely escapist entertainment was what audiences demanded. However, "Meet me..." was not only a
huge commercial success but has also endured better than it's contemporaries because it successfully combines warm nostalgia
with genuine emotion. It was directed by Vincente Minnelli - one of the towering figures of Hollywood musicals (the
director or "An American in Paris" amongst many other classics). He provided Judy Garland with the favourite role of her
entire career in this film. Within two years he had married her and later became the father of Liza. Truly those of us who are
fans of stage musicals have a lot to thank him for.

The songwriting team of composer Hugh Martin and lyricist Ralph Blane earned their greatest renown for
this film which launched the perennial "The Trolley Song" as well as this classic. Born August 11, 1914, in
Birmingham, Alabama Martin studied piano at Birmingham University before making his Broadway debut singing
in the 1937 production Hooray for What?. There he met NBC TV singer Ralph Blane and began a partnership that
lasted for the next fifty years.

This is one of the saddest and most beautiful Christmas songs ever written, but modern performances by singing groups tend
to focus on the nostalgic element of a group of old and dear friends re-uniting in order to deliver a tender and uplifting performance.
