Note de programme :
L'œuvre de John Rutter est avant tout marquée par ses compositions chorales. Héritier de la
tradition liturgique anglaise, il compose principalement des pièces religieuses. Ses œuvres les plus
connues sont le Requiem (1985), le Magnificat (1990), le Psalmfest (1993) et la Mass of the Children
(2003). Il a également harmonisé ou adapté de nombreux cantiques. Il ne se définit cependant pas
comme croyant. En 2003, il a déclaré sur CBS : « Je ne pense pas qu'il soit nécessaire d'être croyant, ou de
chercher à promouvoir la foi religieuse de quelque manière que ce soit, pour composer de la musique religieuse
de qualité. ».

For the beauty of the earth est l'un des nombreux hymnes populaires de Rutter. Cette œuvre est
souvent interprétée lors de mariages dans les pays anglo-saxons. For the beauty of the earth, composé
en 1980, met en musique les paroles bien connus de Folliot S. Pierpoint (1835-1917). Pierpoint
avait écrit en 1864 un hymne plus long, qu'il a appelé The Sacrifice of Praise (un sacrifice de louange)
destiné à la Sainte Communion. Rutter, en utilisant un nouveau titre, composa l'œuvre pour
Rosemary Heffley et l'Association des Directeurs de Chorale du Texas. Destiné à être chanté par
l'école ou des chœurs amateurs, cette belle pièce est devenue immensément populaire.
