AUX FORÊTS
D’ARDENNE
Le 6 juin 44, les Alliés débarquent en Normandie et en-
tament leur percée à travers la France. En septembre, ils
libèrent villes et villages belges et luxembourgeois. Du
16 décembre 44 à la fin janvier 45, dans un nouveau dé-
luge de feu et de luttes acharnées, soldats et population
civile vont revivre l’enfer sur le front ardennais.
LE PLAN D’HITLER
Dernière tentative
Hitler prépare la bataille de la dernière chance en
Ardenne. L’objectif est de reprendre Anvers, principal
port par où sont acheminés renforts et ravitaillements
indispensables aux Alliés. La prise de la ville et de l’Es-
caut défendus par les Britanniques et les Canadiens en-
traînerait leur isolement et contraindrait les Alliés à si-
gner une paix séparée.
L’effort principal de l’offensive repose sur la 6e SS Pz A
de Dietrich, qui, avançant par la trouée de Manderfeld
(Losheim) et le massif d’Elsenborn doit franchir la Meuse
entre Liège et Huy puis s’emparer d’Anvers. Au centre
du front, la 5e Pz A de von Manteuffel doit percer le Sch-
nee-Eifel, s’emparer de St Vith, de Bastogne, traverser
la Meuse entre Huy et Givet et foncer vers Bruxelles. La
7e Armée de Brandenberger a mission de couvrir le flanc
sud, de reprendre le Grand-Duché de Luxembourg et
d’atteindre Givet.
L’OFFENSIVE
Dans les brumes de l’automne
Le 16 décembre 44 à 5h30 débute la Bataille des
Ardennes. L’offensive est appelée “Wacht am Rhein” puis
“Herbsnebel” (brumes d’automne). Elle surprend tota-
lement les Alliés. A cet endroit, les forces américaines
sont clairsemées. Le secteur crucial de la manœuvre al-
lemande, au Nord, est tenu par de jeunes recrues amé-
ricaines (les 99e et 106e ID et le 14e groupe de cavalerie)
sans expérience mais aussi par des vétérans aguerris
(comme la 2e ID ; les Indianhead). Le 17, une colonne
blindée de la 1re Pz D, sous le commandement de Peiper
s’engouffre. Sa progression est jalonnée de massacres
(Baugnez, Ligneuville, Stavelot, …). Piégé par le sautage
des ponts sur la Lienne puis sur l’Amblève, le colonel SS
repart vers La Gleize et Stoumont. Isolé et sans ravitail-
lement, Peiper décide alors de détruire tout son équipe-
ment lourd et de rejoindre à pied la 116e Pz D.
A cette date, des unités britanniques (XXXe Corps)
prennent place sur la Meuse tandis que la 116e Pz D
progresse par Houffalize et se dirige vers Hotton. A
Bastogne, le 21 décembre, le 47e corps allemand (5e Pz A)
parvient à encercler la ville où les américains de la 101e
Abn D ne cèdent rien : “Nuts !”. Au GD de Luxembourg,
la résistance de la 28 e US ID retarde l’avancée ennemie
depuis la frontière allemande jusqu’à Bastogne.
Le 23, le ciel s’éclaircit, et l’aviation alliée, jusque-là
clouée au sol, entre dans le jeu. Au Nord ; du 24 au 26,
la ville de St Vith est bombardée par les Alliés. Le 26, à
Assenois, la 4e Arm D (3 US) réussit à briser l’encercle-
ment de Bastogne. Les Allemands tenteront en vain de
couper le passage. Le 30, c’est l’échec de la 5e Pz A. Au
Nord, le 31, les “Indianhead” reconquièrent Krinkelt et
Rocherath. A l’Ouest, la pointe est atteinte à Celles ; aux
portes de Dinant. Jamais la Meuse ne sera traversée.
LA CONTRE-OFFENSIVE
La seconde libération
des Ardennes
La contre-offensive débute le 3 janvier. La 1 US, démar-
rant au Nord, doit rejoindre à Houffalize la 3 US qui part
du Sud. A l’Ouest, la 6e Abn D du XXXe corps britannique
intervient entre Dinant et Hotton puis se dirige vers La
Roche. Le 11 janvier, les unités britanniques et améri-
caines se rejoignent à La Roche, puis le 14 à la Barrière
de Champlon. Enfin, le 16, les divisions de Hodges (1 US)
et de Patton (3 US) percent le saillant allemand et se
retrouvent à Houffalize. Fin de la Bataille des Ardennes.
Les derniers soldats allemands battent définitivement
en retraite, rejetés au-delà de la ligne Siegfried, à la fin
du mois de janvier.
