Matisse, Czanne, Picasso The Stein family Grand Palais From October 5th 2011 to January 16th 2012

Do you remember the character Gertrude Stein in Midnight in Paris? In the movie of Woody Allen, this influential woman, artists friend, used to see them in her apartment to advice them sometimes reading a manuscript for Hemingway, sometimes giving her opinion on a painting of Picasso. We feel how Gertrude Steins opinion was important for the emerging artists who will become the main artistic figures Matisse, Picasso, Czanne, Renoir, Bonnard, Vallotton and Picabia. Until the 16th of January 2012, the Grand Palais exhibits the Stein Family collection, made up of Gertrude, but also Lo and the couple Michael and Sarah. This nonstandard and wealthy American family established in Paris (rue Madame and rue Fleurus on the left bank) contributed to set a new standard as regards artistic taste in modern art. They welcomed many artists settled in Paris and built an avant-garde collection. Very avant-garde. Lo Stein bought the Fauve painting Femme au chapeau of Matisse just after it created a scandal during the autumn exhibition of 1905. Each member of the family is described through the exhibition. We discover the history and amazing collection of this precursor family which felt and supported the great modern painting masters before they moment of glory.

Vous souvenez-vous du personnage Gertrude Stein dans Midnight in Paris ? Dans le film de Woody Allen, cette femme dinfluence, amie des artistes, les reoit dans son appartement et les conseille, tantt relisant un manuscrit pour Hemingway, tantt donnant son avis sur une peinture de son ami Picasso. On y peroit quel point lavis de Gertrude Stein comptait pour les artistes mergeants de lpoque qui deviendront les grandes figures artistiques que sont Matisse, Picasso, Czanne, Renoir, Bonnard, Vallotton ou encore Picabia. Le Grand Palais prsente jusquau 16 janvier 2012 la collection de la famille Stein, compose de Gertrude, mais aussi de Lo et du couple Michael et Sarah. Cette famille amricaine hors norme et fortune installe Paris (rue Madame et rue Fleurus) contribua imposer une nouvelle norme en matire de gout artistique dans lart moderne. Ils recevaient dans leur appartement le tout Paris artistique et constiturent une collection davant-garde. Avant garde sil en est Leo Stein acheta le tableau Fauve Femme au chapeau de Matisse juste aprs quil eut fait scandale au salon dautomne de 1905. Chaque membre de la famille est dpeint dans le parcours de lexposition. On y dcouvre lhistoire dune famille de prcurseurs qui a su sentir et soutenir les talents des grands maitres de la peinture moderne avant leur heure de gloire.
