PERFORMANCE NOTES:
"Angele Dei" also known as the Prayer to One's Guardian Angel, was in the past attributed to St. Anselm (ca. 1003-1109), for it appears in medieval
collections of his works. However, it has been determined that it was added to his works sometime after his death.
Further research shows that this prayer is an 11th/12th century interpolation of a prayer composed by Reginald of Canterbury, who died after
1109. The prayer is from his work the Life of St. Malchus (d. ca. 390), who was a famous hermit who was a friend of St. Jerome (ca. 341-420). The
popular English translation is from the later half of the 19th century, and appears in the Baltimore Manual of Prayers.
This particular melody represents the simplicity of one's prayer to his Guardian Angel, but is developed to illustrate an angel spreading its wings
then closes them as a protective embrace for its charge against the assault of demons. October 2 is the memorial to them and the prayer is said to carry a
partial indulgence.
This work is part of a suite of meditations, a work in progress. (Contact the publisher for availability.) This piece was begun around July 2002 at
De La Salle-College of St. Benilde in Manila, Philippines and completed on February 29, 2004. This edition was revised on August 13, 2005.
