PART II - RESEARCH CONTRIBUTIONS
1 Most significant contributions to research
1.1)Development of quantum dot, 3D and dye sensitise based solar cells: We are developing in
our Laboratory Quantum Synthesis of semiconductor nanomaterials and systems for photovoltaic
applications.. ZnO nancrystals of less than 5 nm have been prepared using quantum dot and
characterized in our Laboratory. A master student is finishing work related on the comparison of
quantum dot (QD) synthesis and electro deposition of ZnO nanoparticles. It was shown that QD method
gives more small particle size (less than 5 nm) than electrochemical method (around 100 nm). In
previous work, we have also shown that Chemically and electrochemically deposited thin films
semiconductors with heteropolyacids on various supports were found to be unique because thin films
semiconductors junctions Sb2S3/Ge; ;CdSe/CdTe, etc. deposited with HPAs exhibited a conversion
efficient of light 3 times higher than those junctions fabricated without HPAs. The optical transmission
and the response time of the junctions were very significantly higher than those of junctions deposited
without HPAs. These approaches are now used to develop: i) new generation 3D solar cells based on
nano-composite inorganic safe materials and quasi-solid Dye sensitized solar cells. An invited Chapter
of 75 printed pages is published in Volume 12 of Advances in Electrochem. Sc. and Eng. (2010).
1.2) Development of new catalyst for electrochemical energy applications.
Our contributions are based on the development of low cost new materials for electrochemical energy
applications, in particular PEM Fuel Cells. Based on the concept of synergetic materials, efficient
advanced modified or composite materials can be designed for specific electrochemical systems, we
introduced first Pt-oxide cathodes and very recently the Pd-alloy catalysts for the ORR. Now we are
supporting this concept by quantum-mechanical calculations of adsorption/de-sorption energy of O, H,
OH, etc. This is very important for the development of efficient non-platinum alloys for oxygen
reduction reaction (ORR). I used this concept and develop for the first time new alloys Pd-alloys which
ORR activities in acid medium are similar to those of Pt-alloys. In 2003, we introduce the concept of
alcohol tolerant Pd-alloys cathode catalyst for the ORR for Direct alcohol Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell
applications. This is successfully used in the identification of appropriate cathode for direct ethanol fuel
cell applications. This first paper was published in 2004 with an exceptional citation index. Alcohol
tolerant cathode catalysts based on Pd-alloys have been also introduced by our group.
1.3) Development of advanced low-cost protonic membranes based on acid-modified-PBI, alkalimodified-PBI and (HPAs) modified Nafion or Flemion (15-500 m) cast from their solution for
Fuel Cell Applications: When incorporating in Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells, the new
membranes make the H2/O2 PEMFC power density increases in 40% for HPAs-Nafion and 50% for
HPAs-Flemion with respect to that of blank commercial Nafion or Flemion, respectively. After the
first review article, I wrote an article in 1998 and the second in 2004 with an exceptional citation index..
1.4) Development of polyelectrolyte based materials, corrosion studies and grafting of bio-molecules on
modified surface of Bio-materials: Some bio-molecules have been successfully grafted on these surfaces
NiTi and carbon nanotubes surfaces. We issued 3 US and international patents in this area the last 6
years. We developed polyelectrolyte for neuro-electronic devices in medicine. We also study the
corrosion of Iron-Cobalt Alloys for MRI-Based Propulsion Embedded in Untethered Microdevices
Operating in the Vascular Network
1.3) Development of non-Pt catalyst and Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) for Direct
hydrocarbons PEMFC: Recently, we demonstrated the feasibility of a low temperature Direct Propane
Fuel Cell (DPFC). Commercial (Pt/C and PtRu/C) and home-prepared (PtOx/C and Pt/C+CrO3)
electrodes were tested as anode electro-catalysts in a 2.25 cm2 geometrical active area fuel cell. The
results show that a DPFC using anodes based on PtOx exhibits the best behaviour for the direct catalytic
electro-oxidation of propane. This is now confirmed by some groups and we open a new window in
DPFC with significant scientific and technology issues to be developed.
