Lorsque la chanteuse
Betty Bonifassi et
le percussionniste
Jean-Phi Goncalves ont
décidé de nommer leur
duo Beast, ils étaient
loin de se douter à
quel point ce choix
serait judicieux.
Le duo montréalais Beast est plus
sollicité que jamais un an et demi après
son premier album : tout a commencé
aux Grammy 2010 avec la candidature
remarquée du vidéoclip Mr. Hurricane.
Le duo a ensuite entrepris la tournée des
nouveaux marchés européens pour faire
connaître son album. Il mijote mainte-

nant la bande sonore de Filière 13, film
dirigé par l’acteur Patrick Huard, primé
aux Genie.
Ce même Huard a passé la commande
à Beast peu après avoir rencontré le duo
à l’émission Tout le monde en parle.
C’était en avril 2009 à Radio-Canada.
Huard confie ainsi au duo sa première
composition de bande sonore. La chan-
teuse Betty Bonifassi a déjà montré
qu’elle pouvait interpréter un succès
avec son Belleville Rendez-Vous, obsé-
dante chanson thème des Triplettes de
Belleville. Celle-ci l’a conduite à la tribune
des Oscars 2004. « C’était seulement
pour mon interprétation, dit Betty. Cette
fois-ci, nous devons composer une
bande sonore qui ajoute une dimension
inénarrable par l’image. »
On se demande comment le trip-rock
de Beast, sorte de rage inspirée, fera
contraste avec l’humour du scénario,
mais Betty pense avoir trouvé le fil con-
ducteur... « Musiciens et comédiens sont
très proches, car ils ont en commun le
sens du rythme », dit-elle. Autre terrain
d’entente de Beast et de Huard : une
dette commune envers la diversité cul-
turelle montréalaise, source de liberté
créative pour les artistes qui ont choisi
de vivre à Montréal.

When vocalist Betty Bonifassi and drummer/
producer Jean-Phi Goncalves first came together to
create Beast, they had no idea just how apt the name
would prove to be.
A full year and a half after the release of their self-titled debut, the Montréal-based duo
find themselves busier than ever: starting 2010 with a Grammy nomination in the Best
Short Form Music Video category for their clip Mr. Hurricane; touring and releasing Beast
in new markets throughout Europe; and now, composing the soundtrack for Genie Award
winning director and actor Patrick Huard’s upcoming feature, Filière 13.
Huard first approached Beast shortly after he and the band appeared on Radio-Canada
television’s popular Tout le Monde en Parle in April 2009. Although it’s Beast’s first film
score, Bonifassi has already proven the power her vocals can unleash on the big screen
with her contribution to the animated hit Les Triplettes de Belleville and with her perfor-
mance of the film’s Oscar-nominated theme, Belleville Rendez–vous, at the 2004 Academy
Awards. “But that was only interpretation,” Bonifassi stresses. “When you’re writing
music for a movie you have to create the missing dimension the director wants to show,
but hasn’t with his images.”
While the pairing of Huard’s eclectic comedy and Beast’s rage-fuelled, soul-infused
“trip-rock” may seem a study in opposites, Bonifassi feels Beast and Huard’s work share
a common dimension. “Actors and musicians are very close, because of the rhythmic
aspect of their art.” In addition, and most importantly, Beast and Huard’s performances
share another common thread: a mutual debt to Montréal’s diverse cultural landscape,
and an equal share of the creative freedom it routinely inspires in the artists who call the
city home.
