Part 2.6 – Plotting suitable graphs to represent your data

1) Tea, derived from the leaves and buds of the shrub Camellia sinensis, is one of the
world's most popular beverages. Ceylon tea grown in certain geographical areas in Sri
Lanka has gained a great popularity in the global tea market due to its unique
characteristics. An undergraduate researcher conducts a study to find a relationship
between height and the number of leaves of the tea plant by selecting five main tea
growing regions in Sri Lanka.

The result of this study as follows,

Region Average Height of the Average Number of
plant (cm) leaves
Nuwara Eliya 450 580
Kandy 390 470
Dimbula 270 410
Uva 440 240
Ruhuna 360 440
Udupussellawa 210 520

2) Soil texture plays a vital role for nutrient supplies, aeration, root development and
moisture content. Various combinations of different sizes of mineral particles form soil
texture. A student analyzed a representative soil sample from the University of Kelaniya
and different mineral particles responsible for soil texture was obtained as follows,

Mineral Particle Percentage by

volume (%)
Clay 37.5
Slit 24.1
Fine Sand 13.8
Coarse Sand 6.4
Gravel 18.2

3) A student carried out an experiment in which variable masses of Magnesium (Mg) were
added to an excess of dilute sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and the volume of hydrogen (H2) gas
evolved were measured each time. Here are the results of this experiment,

Mass of Vol. of H2 Standard

Mg (g) (cm3) Deviation
0.5 35.0 ±10.4
1.0 65.0 ±6.7
1.5 90.0 ±18.9
2.0 95.0 ±7.5
2.5 115.0 ±8.2
3.0 140.0 ±5.8
3.5 155.0 ±12.3
4.0 160.0 ±11.9

4) The Arrhenius equation quantifies the relationship between reaction rate and temperature.

Where, K = Reaction rate

A = Pre-exponential factor
Ea = Activation Energy
R = Gas constant
T = Temperature in Kelvin
The rate constant for the following reaction was determined over the range of 50 K.
The Activation energy of this reaction was 53.07 kJ/mol and the Pre-exponential factor
was 2.3 10-9 Lmol-1s-1
2N2O (g) 2N2 (g) + O2(g)
a) Select suitable parameters from the Arrhenius equation to plot a graph

b) Prepare the spreadsheet starting form T=100 K to 150 K and with a difference of 1 K

c) If the Ea of this reaction has decreased to 29.64 kJ/mol, then what changes would you
expect in your graph?
