Noms de la Nouvelle France avant 1800

Le choix du prénom chez les catholiques n'était pas laissé au hasard ou à la fantaisie des parents. Au
contraire, l'Église tenait à contrôler l'attribution des prénoms pour s'assurer que les enfants recevaient au
jour de leur baptême, le prénom d'un saint qui les guiderait tout au long de leur vie. Ainsi, au Québec,
Monseigneur de Saint-Vallier stipula dans son Rituel du Diocèse de Québec qui énonçait les règles à suivre
pour la rédaction des actes de baptême, mariage et sépulture : « L'Église défend aux Curez de permettre qu'on donne
des noms profanes ou ridicules à l'enfant, comme d'Apollon, de Diane, &c. Mais elle commande qu'on lui donne le nom d'un Saint
ou d'une Sainte selon son sexe, afin qu'il puisse imiter les vertus & ressentir les effets de la protection auprès de Dieu... ». Une
liste des prénoms acceptés – 1251 réservés aux garçons et 373 aux filles - est publiée en annexe du Rituel.
Outre une forte saveur religieuse, il résulte de ces règles une forte concentration des prénoms en Nouvelle-
France. On y trouve, comme en France de l'Ancien Régime d'ailleurs, une prédominance de Jean et de Pierre
chez les garçons et de Marie, Madeleine, Marguerite, Anne et Jeanne chez les filles. Jean-Baptiste et Joseph,
cependant, sont plus fréquents dans la colonie; de même, l'engouement pour Marie est plus fort en Amérique
alors que Jeanne l'est plus en France.

Les Canadiens-français descendent d'un nombre relativement faible d'immigrants. De surcroît, plusieurs
étaient homonymes. Il en résulte que le nombre de patronymes québécois francophones aujourd'hui est très
petit par rapport à la France : quelques milliers ici, des centaines de milliers en France. Tout s'est joué dans
les premiers siècles de peuplement. La distribution des patronymes de baptisés les plus fréquents avant 1800
montre que 37 patronymes comptent plus de 1000 baptisés, 150 plus de 500 et 962 plus de 100.
Les quinze noms les plus fréquents regroupent plus de 28 000 individus, et 1 400 noms à peine suffisent pour
couvrir près de 95% de tous les individus nés dans la colonie avant 1800.
Le tableau suivant donne la liste des cinquante noms les plus fréquents; on trouve en haut de la liste, sans
surprise, les noms correspondant aux premiers immigrants :

Noms Espagnols du 16e siècle

The names and naming practices for this handout were primarily taken from a series of books called Catálogo
de Pasajeros a Indias. The books contain lists of records of the people who traveled from Spain to the New
World in the 16th century. The entries were altered from the original in that accents were added and
abbreviated names were expanded. It is also possible that given names were normalized, although it looks
like the surnames were not. Therefore, while the names listed here are in correct forms for the 16th century,
there are probably other correct forms. In particular, for any name containing an accent the version without
the accent is also appropriate. This is currently a work in progress - the list of names will be updated as
more of the Catálogo is entered. Currently the data is taken mostly from volume V, years 1571 and 1574, with
smaller samples from 1536 (volume III), 1560 (volume IV), and 1578 (volume VI).
The names in this source generally consist of a given name followed by one or two bynames (there are a few
examples of 4 element names in the last volume of the Catálogo, but none of them have yet made it into the
data). While the choice of bynames were frequently governed by inheritance, that is, the names were
hereditary surnames taken from one or both parents, for simplicity we divide the bynames into three types:
• Patronyme : These are names originally derived from the given name of one’s father. For example, if, in the 10th century, Diego’s father was Rodrigo, then
Diego would be called Diego Rodriguez, where Rodriguez is the patronymic. The form was the same for women: Diego’s sister Maria could be called Maria
Rodriguez. Patronymics were frequently formed by altering the father's name into a patronymic form originally derived from a Latin gentive form.
Sometimes, however, patronymics were formed by using the given name unaltered, such as Diego Rodrigo. Approximately 1/3 of the bynames in the Catalog
 were patronymic in form. In the Catálogo patronymics are not longer literal; for example, one of the entries is for Alonso Sánchez. His father's name (included
in the entry) is not Sancho but Diego Sánchez.
• Locative: These are names taken from places. In general, locatives come in two forms: names that refer to the name of a place (such as de Figueroa), and
names that refer to a type of location, such as del Rio ("of the river”). About half of the bynames used in the 16th century were locatives. Locatives were often
used with the preposition de (“of”), although there are examples where the name is used by itself (for example, Alonso León).
• Autres : The other types of bynames are uncommon enough to be grouped together. These include descriptive nicknames (Calvo, “bald”, el Rojo, “the red”),
occupational names (Scribano, “scribe”), and titles (Caballero, “knight").

There is relatively little information available in English about Portuguese names in period. This document
should help fill the gap by making available around 400 men's names and a handful of women's names from a
collection of letters written by King João III (who reigned 1521-1557). Although these letters cover much of
the reign of João III, they do so spottily. Some years (1533 for example) are well represented by letters, while
other years (including all years between 1542 and 1548) are not represented at all. Nonetheless the sample of
letters is large enough to be of interest both to scholars and to students of naming practice.

While there is some bias in these documents toward individuals who are higher ranking than the social level
the SCA is trying to reconstruct, many of the people mentioned are sailors and merchants. Therefore, many
of the names represent the gentry, which is the sort of people that interest us.

Many individuals were mentioned multiple times; I have only recorded each once. However, I assume that
people with different bynames (when those differences are not simple spelling changes) were distinct
individuals (i.e. that <Alvaro Mendez> is not the same individual as <Alvaro Mendez de Vasconcellos>) unless
the text of the letter makes it clear that they were the same person. Likewise, if the same name is mentioned
after a gap of 5 years or more, I have assumed that they are different people, unless textual evidence suggests
that they are the same individual.

A tilde (~) marks a nasalized vowel. Certain vowels (e, i, y) are marked with tildes in this data, though they
are not used in modern Portuguese; these vowels are followed by tildes in the data. In such names as
<Fernam>/<Fernão>, <-am>, <-ã>, and <-ão> are all used interchangeably. The pronunciation marked by <-ão>
(similar to the modern Portuguese form, e.g. <São Paulo>, which is pronounced rather like <ow> in English). It
is not clear whether the spelling ending in <-am> reflects an alternate pronunciation for the name, or whether
it is simply an archaic spelling, not yet replaced by a form that more accurately reflects the 16th century
pronunciation.

A WORD ABOUT THE WELSH, SCOTS AND IRISH

Note that if you are from Wales, Scotland, or Ireland, the name pools you draw from may be quite different,
along with the common methods of forming names. A few notes may help.

Wales had its own distinctive naming practices and a largely separate name pool. The usual form of surname
was a patronymic (derived from your father's given name). For a man, this is: [given name] ap [your father's
given name] (such as Owein ap Griffith). For women, [given name] verch [your father's given name]
(Myfanwy verch Eynon). There were ainsi que some areas of Wales that had been under English law for 100
years or more, where English names and name patterns were more common (such as Owen Tudor, King
Henry VIII's grandfather - who had a Welsh given name, but an English-pattern surname).

Scotland is actually divided into two rather different cultural areas. In the lowland and urban parts of
Scotland, your naming practices and name pool would be very similar to the English (though with some
regional differences). The common language spoken in these parts of Scotland was Scots, a version of
English (or a language close to English) and not Gaelic. In fact, the Scots-speaking culture has in some ways
more affinities (dress, customs, etc.) with English culture of the time than with the Gaelic culture in the
Highlands.

In the Gaelic-speaking Scottish Highlands, the type of "clans" we usually think of, with fixed, inherited
surnames, didn't appear until long after our period, in fact not till about the 18th century. During the reign of
Elizabeth in England, by far the commonest form of surname in Gaelic-speaking areas is a patronymic. For a
man, this produces a name like: [given name] mac [possessive form of your father's given name], such as Eoin
mac Donnchaidh. For a woman, [given name] inghean [possessive form of your father's given name]
(Dearbhorgaill inghean Dhomhnaill). Patronymics account for the overwhelming majority of the period
Gaelic surnames we know or can guess at (though unfortunately, very few Gaelic names are recorded in
Gaelic in Scotland).

In Ireland, ainsi que a Gaelic-speaking country, these same patronymics were used as well, and were formed
in basically the same way.

However in Ireland there was ainsi que another common alternative: the clan byname. The pattern for clan
bynames for men is [given name] ó [clan ancestor's given name] (Conmhaol ó Conchobhair). For women,
[given name] inghean uí [clan ancestor's given name] (Siobhán inghean uí Mháille). The clan ancestor
referred to would be the man, usually several generations back, after whom the clan was named.

NOTE that both Irish and Scottish Gaelic have a complex grammar. The same name, or part of a name, may
be pronounced and spelled quite differently, depending on just where and how it's used. Dictionaries and
name books are generally NOT very helpful with this. It's wise to consult someone knowledgeable about the
languages (and about historic naming practices in these languages), in order to get a Welsh, Scottish or Irish
name right.

Titres noblesses
NOBLES DURANT L’ANCIEN REGIME (EN FRANCE)
Durant l'Ancien Régime (du XVIe au XVIIIe, à la révolution), le roi est à la tête du système. Il a des vassaux
qui lui doivent fidélité et ont fait vœu d'allégeance. À l'origine, il n'y avait pas de hiérarchie parmi les titres –
excepté le vicomte qui est un « vice-comte ». Celle-ci est apparue à la fin du XVIe siècle. Il faut de plus faire
la différence entre les titres, qui sont attachés à la terre, et les rangs (prince, chevalier et écuyer) attachés à la
personne. Ainsi, pour devenir comte, le noble doit posséder une seigneurie érigée en comté ; s'il la vend, il
perd dès lors son titre de comte. La situation se complique lorsque l'on estime le cas des roturiers possédant
un fief de dignité, c'est-à-dire une seigneurie titrée (baronnie, vicomté, comté, marquisat). Ces roturiers ne
peuvent se parer du titre attaché à la seigneurie, et ne peuvent être que « seigneur de la baronnie de... ». À
l'inverse, les nobles, c'est-à-dire ceux qui jouissent du rang de chevalier ou d'écuyer, prennent le titre attaché
à leur seigneurie.

Attaché à une terre, le titre de noblesse d'Ancien Régime s'articule nécessairement par une particule au nom
de cette terre.
