Place finger 3 of your right or left hand on any key of the piano. The starting
note is up to you! Any white key is fine.
3 Play each note while speaking “start,” “step up,” etc. Keep your eyes on the

4 Repeat steps 2-3 using your other hand.

Section Two: Treble Clef and Bass Clef
The sight reading exercises in Section Two will use a TREBLE CLEF or a BASS CLEF.
As you practice each exercise, use the following steps:

PREPARE: Steps 1 – 3 are done without playing the piano.

IDENTIFY the clef: TREBLE or BASS.
POINT to each note on the page and say how they are moving: “start, step up, repeat, etc.”

3 Point to each note again and say the LETTER NAME: “F, E, E, etc.”

PLAY: Use the piano for steps 4 – 6.

4 PLACE your hand in the correct position on the piano, using the right hand for treble clef
and the left hand for bass clef. Observe the starting note and starting finger to figure out
where to place your hand.
5 PLAY each note while speaking “start,” “step up,” etc. Keep your eyes on the page,
following the notes as you play.
6 Play each note again while singing the LETTER NAMES.

Section Three: Time Signature and Rhythm
Congratulations! You are now ready to sight read exercises that use TIME SIGNATURES and
RHYTHM. As you practice each exercise in Section Three, use the following steps:

PREPARE: Steps 1 – 4 are done without playing the piano.

IDENTIFY the clef and time signature.
TAP the rhythm while COUNTING the beat.
3 POINT to each note on the page, identifying steps, skips and repeats (the first note is “start”).
4 POINT to each note while singing the LETTER NAMES.

PLAY: Use the piano for steps 5 – 7

5 Place your hand in the correct position on the piano. Use right hand for treble clef and left
hand for bass clef. Observe the starting note and starting finger number to figure out
where to place your hand.
6 PLAY and sing the LETTER NAMES.
