Description
Every year, more than 1 million visitors enjoy the magnificent natural spectacle offered by the
Rhine Falls. Depending on the time of the year, between 250 and 600 m3 of water per second
plummet to the depths. Visitors can walk around the basin, cross the bridge above the Rhine
Falls to Castle Laufen on the other side and proceed from there to the 'Knzeli' observation
platform, a most spectacular viewpoint built directly beside the water.
Various boat trips downstream of the Falls with a duration of 10 to 40 minutes are also
available. Some of these include disembarkation at the Rheinfallfelsen, a large rock.

Description
The Edelfrauengrab (grave of the noblewoman) Waterfalls owe their name to a natural erosion
cave directly beside a cascade of the waterfalls, where, according to legend, an unfaithful
noblewoman met a violent end.
The Gottschlg Valley conservation area with the waterfalls and the Karlsruher Grat
(Karlsruhe Ridge) further up is indeed an outstanding scenic attraction in the Northern Black
Forest.
From the parking area for hikers (sign-posted), it is only a few steps to the bottom cascade of
the waterfalls, where the Edelfrauengrab is located. Needless to say, it is well worthwhile
climbing further up the adventurous paths and footbridges along the Gottschlg stream.
If you want to go on an exciting hike, you climb up to the Karlsruher Grat at the head of the
Gottschlg Valley, there you can use the via ferrata. The path leads back to Ottenhfen from
the Bosensteiner Eck at the top end of the via ferrata via the 'Brennte Schrofen'. The overall
distance is approx. 12 km, the difference in height 500m, a walking time of 4-5 hours should
be allowed for.

The Black Forest High Road runs over 60 km from Freudenstadt to Baden-Baden. The most
beautiful tourist route of the Black Forest celebrated its 75th birthday in 2007 but is still an
attractive destination for tourists and locals.
There are magnificent views of the Black Forest valleys, the Rhine Valley and Alsace and the
Voges Mountains along the entire route. There are also a large number of tourist highlights,
such as Lake Mummelsee, the Lothar Path or the newly opened wilderness path on the
Bhlerhhe.
In winter, skiers enjoy themselves in particular. Snow reliability is virtually guaranteed owing
to the altitude between 700 and 1164 m. A large number of ski-lifts and a connection to the
Nordschwarzwald cross country skiing trail offer something for everyone.

Description
The rocks of the Karlsruher Grat (Karlsruhe Ridge) consist of quartz porphyry which came into
being around 250 million years ago through the cooling of the magma filling of a fissure which
was 4 km long and 750 metres wide. The harder porphyry remained as a ridge after the
erosion of the surrounding softer rocks.
The Karlsruher Grat can be accessed from the Black Forest High Road (turn off towards
Allerheiligen at the Ruhestein, car park at the Bosenstein after approx. 3km), or from
Ottenhfen from the parking area for hikers at the Edelfrauengrab Waterfalls. From here a
fairly strenuous ascent through the Gottschlg Valley has to be overcome first of all. This is
very beautiful, however, and takes you past the Edelfrauengrab Waterfalls, amongst other
things.
There are no marked paths on the ridge itself, you are left to find your own route, and
sometimes you have to turn back because there is no way through. Surefootedness and
strong shoes are prerequisites. If required, more difficult places can be circumvented via a
parallel path running up the north side of the ridge. The climb up the Felsenweg Trail takes
approx. 1/2 to 1 hour.
Incidentally, the Karlsruher Grat was named in 1926 in tribute to several climbers from the
Karlsruhe region who died in an accident on the ridge.

Hiking in the Black Forest has a long tradition. The Schwarzwaldverein, or Black Forest
Association, has maintained a network of hiking trails for more than 140 years, in order to
make the beauties of nature accessible to locals and tourists.
And you don't have to start off with a complete long-distance hiking trail with a length of
more than 200 km - there are countless local circular hiking trails with a great variety of
lengths and levels of difficulty.

A list and description of barefoot parks and barefoot trails in the Black
Forest
Description
The barefoot park is a relatively new idea; the first barefoot park in the Black Forest was
opened in Dornstetten-Hallwangen as recently as 1999. The basic philosophy is that walking
barefoot over a wide variety of surfaces makes people more aware of their natural
surroundings. The hydrotherapy principles developed by Father Sebastian Kneipp also play a
role. But above all, its fun for all the family!
Description
The visitors experience different terrains and challenges for
improving balance and toe grip over a 2.5 km route or a
shorter route for beginners. The water playground is a
particular attraction for the children.
